I wouldn't recommend it under any circumstances. Too much can go wrong. It won't even pull itself up unless it has a really powerful engine. Most 3-D planes can be capable of this with the proper techniques. A Tiger 2 will take of relatively quickly with a strong engine in the upper end of the manufacturers ratings.

Definitely not a good idea. The Tiger II doesn't have enough power to get airborn from a hand toss. So you'll probably wind up with a broken airplane. Plus, the size of the plane could cause problems with getting a clean toss which could result in a full throttle spinning prop coming back at you, which will usually wind up with a trip to the emergency room.

Best to use a runway.

Not under any circumstances, No.

Apart from being expensive on models (even if you manage to reach a good flying speed, it's not an easy thing to get it flying on an even keel before it piles into the ground), it's far too dangerous as the prop has a habit of touching painful places on the body, especially for a beginner.

I wouldn't do it either, I was just wondering, because most rc airplanes, powered by a battery can be hand launched.

My airplanes are way to expensive for me to test those things

Becasue my problem is, I have a great field right 200 yards from my house (Field: Half a mile long, Quater of a mile wide), but there is gras all over the place and it's not cut, so it's hard to get an airplane up from a "runway"

We used to hand launch the .15 powered high wing trainer that I learned with. Of course that was partly because it was a bit of a handfull on the ground.

when I was StreetFlying, we didnt hand launch, we took off from ... the street.
You got a road anywhere near your house? I mean one that doesnt have cars on it for long stretches of time?

Default RE: What do you think?

no not really, ther is just one, but there come cars avery 5-10 minutes

I wouldn't be a problem to get it up, but I don't really know, if I start to land and the prop goes trough the grass, wouldn't it be damaged?

Always have a spotter when you streetfly.
The prop wont get hurt if you kill the engine at 30' and glide her in. The little 1/2A 049 planes with no throttle have to wait for the engine to die, then they glide it in.

Always use a spotter when you streetfly.
You have an odd situation, tall grass lands better with no wheels, but you want to use the runway takeoff... hmmm

Have I mentioned the need for a spotter when you streetfly, cause you need one.

I saw a video of a guy trying to do a hand launch. He tripped and the plane went down beside him with the throttle wide open. It just missed his leg!! Nuff said!!! [X(]

Would you get in trouble if you mowed a runway in this open field? It would be a lot of work but it might be worth it.

G'day Mate,
Go & find a club field, join the club & fly safely, a Tiger 2 is a low wing plane & almost impossible to hand launch, because you should hold a plane under the CG, to hand launch properly, & unless you cut hand holes in the wing you can't get a grip on it, under the CG.

I suppose it can be done, but not by me!! I don't like to hand launch anything. Not even my 3D foamies. I guess a lot of it is proper technique, but I don't seem to have it. As for hand launching a glow powered plane, no way!!! That sounds like a recipe for disaster to me.[X(]

Get a lawn mower, push it over to the field, mow a strip, it doesn't have to be very long or wide, then fly your airplane as much as you want. This being based on the assumption that it is OK to fly from the field mentioned.
Better yet, find a club, join the club, then fly your airplane as much as you want. Also, a club will give you access to plenty of advice and help.

"Get a lawn mower, push it over to the field, mow a strip"

Get permission first. It is one thing to fly over some grass and if someone yells, you can say "No Harm Done"
It is another thing to mow a scar in someones hay field.

It should be no problem to get a strip mowed, because the property is open and there are always some people riding their bike.

Thanks for the tip.

More obstacles and hazards to watch out for. A spotter is once again a must and this idea is getting very "IFFY" IMO.
I appreciate your enthusiasm but think of safety first.

Fandain,
The very last thing you want to do is run into someone with a glow powered airplane. Someone can get very seriously hurt. People riding bikes, or cars coming down a road is NOT the place to fly glow powered airplanes. I can't stress it enough, you need to join a club or at least find a flat place where there any traffic, bicycle, automobile, or otherwise. Do a search and find out where there is a club near you.

doubledee

I understand, that a glow powered plane is not a toy and under special circumstances can kill somebody.

But, there is a path, where the bikers ride their bike and I'm going to fly my plane far away from that. There are no kids or people in general on this field, because it nature and it's not grass that is so short that you can make a picnic or something.

So I understand that you guys say the right thing and that it is important to watch out, but nobody will get hurt

I hope you realize that a plane like the Tiger 2 has a cruise speed of about 70 mph. At that speed, about how long will it take to reach the guys on bikes?!? Most new flyers can't control a trainer at 40 mph. without help much less 70 mph. Just something to think about. Looking forward to reading a flight report if you do decide to try it![8D]

I have a video of a hand launch of a matrix with a .40 engine....only someone else threw the plane while the pilot went full throttle.
It was at a fun fly and the plane had been through a lot months ago and the landing gear kept collapsing because it had been glued so
many times. It worked but at the end of the flight the pilot was going inverted during the limbo event an misjudged his line and the
wing caught the limbo poll.....too funny....but dangerous
