Default Prop & Spinner Questions

First question does anyone know of anybody selling anodized spinners? If so would you please give me a link to their site. Thanks in advance.

Question number two is about which prop to use. I have a MDS .78 Pro engine that I will be using on my P-51D. The suggested 2 blade prop range is
12 x 8 to 13 x 8. Would you just go ahead & use a 2 blade or go for the more scale look & use a 3 blade? If so what size 3 blade would I use for this engine, & would I loose performance by doing so? Again thanks in advance.

P.S. I'm not using the MDS because it is the engine that I want to put in this bird. I am using it because I don't have the money for the 4-stroke that I would like to put in it right now & I got this engine for an extremely good price. It is just like new, being used not much more than enough to get it broken in. It runs very well & idles great with gobs of power so I went ahead & got it for now.

Thanks Ken. I was kind of looking for someone different though. I know about Tru-turn. I'm really hoping to find a blue anodized one if it wasn't too expensive. So much for the scale look huh? lol

There are lots of people around who anodize, I even know of one here on RCU who does it. You could probably use a standard spinner and then have someone anodize it the color you want.

As for the prop, 3 blade can work fine. The typical starting point is to drop an inch from the 2 blade recommendation. I actually looked into running a 3 blade on my WM P-51. I decided against it for several reasons. First was a limited selection of 3 blade props. Second, and more important, was a lack of 3 blade spinners. And finally, it's fairly well accepted that 2 blade props are more efficient. If you're going to cut your own slots, spinner availability doesn't matter, but for this plane I didn't feel like doing this. On a limited budget I'd tend to stick with the known quantity and go with a two blade.

Elenasgrumpy,
Did you look at Tru-Turn's website?? They make anodized spinners too. I got a red anodized spinner from them for my Hanger 9 P-40 and it's a very high quality spinner. very nice

Tru-Turn's are pretty expensive AND THEN add about $16 for the anodizing........ whew

The 2 3/4" for my 46size P40 would be around $50 !!!!!! Guess the $5.00 Sig one (that's the right shape for a P40) is gonna stay.

Ken . I missed that part of their site. That's exactly what I wanted but wow! Darock is right, they are proud of those spinners aren't they? It sure looks nice, but with shipping & anodizing I'm going to be up close to $100 for a spinner! That's more than I payed for the engine, a lot more. LOL Guess I'll have to settle for regular aluminum.

Chuck, Thanks for the info on the props. That's pretty much what I was afraid of too with a 3 blade. I'll just stick with the readily available 2 blade as well.

Elenasgrumpy,
Sorry, I didn't know what the price was on it. The one I got from them was provided for the review I did. What size and color spinner are you looking for??

Well, If I was able to do the anodized thing it would have to be blue. I'll probably have to just get the least expensive regular aluminum one that I can find. I saw a few on ebay around $35. As for size, I measured the circle at the front of the cowl. It is right at 3 1/2 inches. So a 3 1/2" spinner would match that part of the cowl perfectly. I could get away with 3" or 3 1/4" as well. A 3" would only leave 1/4" of the cowl circle exposed on each side & would still look good. A 3 1/4" would only leave an 1/8" showing on each side. So what do you think, what size would you go with??

Elenasgrumpy,
I have the 3-1/2" spinner I had on the P-40. It's red. If you want it I'll send it to you. Heck, I still owe ya for the servos and receiver you sent me. So if you can live with a red one let me know. You'll still have to get the adapter for it that matches your engine, but at least you won't have to spend on the spinner.

Ken, First off I don't feel that you owe me anything!! That is a very generous offer though & if you don't want or need it, I would be glad to take it off your hands. Thank you so much. I may have some more Airtronics stuff for you too. A reciever, & a few servos. I'll pm you about it. Let me know if you need the mailing address again. Thanks again Ken, that's great!!

Point well taken Tim. I also completely forgot about Airborne Models. I don't know what brand of spinner it is that they have. They do have some nice looking aluminum spinners in the size range I need for around $30 to $35. That is pretty reasonable I think.

I've been looking for someone to anodize some heads for me, but haven't found anyone yet. You indicated that you knew of some people in the business. I would appreciate it if you would share some names with a fellow tarheel.

Thanks,

Richard
