I am setting up my WM Extra 60 - 90
The normal setting are:

Ailerons 20mm
Elivator 30mm
Rudder 50mm

I want to set up Flapperons to slow landing speed, I have never used flapperons or flaps before so would like some advise.
What thow should I start with ?
What direction, up or down ?
Should I also mix in some up elevator ?

Start with a small drop - about 5 - 8mm.

Don't mix any elevator at first. Get up high, slow down, and test them out. Fly around slowly to see how the plane responds. Try stalling it (Up High!) And when you're comfortable with how it flies, try bringing it in.

If it has strip ailrons you should be OK. If it has barn door ailerons you are applying wash-in to the wing which will greatly enhance tip stalls which are hazardous at low speeds.

The Ailerons are hinged in the center of the leading edge, I take it this what you call barn door ?

Can you explain how this is different to strip ailerons being used as flapperons ?

"Barn Door" Ailerons are large ailerons that are on the outboard ends of the wing.

Strip ailerons are not as deep, but run the entire length of the wing.

Being an Extra 330 they have quite large surfaces and throws.

Just go with a 5-8mm drop and you should be ok

My friend has this same plane. It lands & slows down pretty well. He's not a great lander, in fact he is a much better flyer than he is at landing, but he has no problems setting this bird down gently. If you're just wanting to set it up with flaperons for the fun of it & just to get some experience with them, that is fine. I have done it with a plane that didn't need them either. This is one of those planes. It doesn't need them, but I can see where it might be fun to have them.

I would definitely heed MinnFlyer's advice of low throw. As you stated they are large control surfaces & if you bring them down too much they are going to take all the wind out of your sails in a hurry!!

Thanks for the advice guys, I have set flapperons on a switch for about 7mm, I also am able to adjust the trow using the respective trimmer. So I can have a play at high altitude.

I have just finished assembly of the bird, dry flight weight ended up quite heavy 9.1 lb / 4120g, the manufacturers specs state the fly weight to be 8.2 lb / 3720g.


elenasgrumpy, any idea what weight your friends bird ended up ?

To be honest I have no idea & I don't think he does either. He's got a Saito 100 on it so weight really isn't an issue, he's got plenty of power. I don't think he's ever bothered to weight it, but I will ask him the next time I talk to him for you.
