Hi all,
I am not 100% sure how the prop effects the flying habit of a plane other then that smaller prop higher rpm and large prop slower duh hehehe. But my question is can a prop effect the stall rate of a plane coming in for a landing? Would a larger prop cause the plane to stall at a slower speed and smaller prop at a higher speed? I am not big on speed but would like to reduce the speed at wich the plane stalls on landing. I have an OS FX 46 and runing a 11X5 and want to try 12X5 or 12X6. The plane is a hanger 9 ultra stick. Thanks

I know what your trying.
Run the engine slow and let the prop produce the drag.
Flying behind the power curve is not a good i'dea and can give you a sudden unexpected stall.
Hard to give an answer with out knowing what plane you have

In your case the plane is already at its stall speed, right? You can't reduce that by changing the prop. I've got an Ultrastick 40, and I can't imagine it getting much slower on landings. It's got a very low stall speed and will land at a fast walk. How heavy is yours? Lowering the weight is the best way to lower the stall speed. Mine is stock, with no added weights but an Irvine .53 that probably weighs just a hair more than your .46fx.
I'd try a 12x4 prop instead of a 12x5, and a 12x6 is going to be a bit much for your engine. I don't care too much about top speed either, and I've found a 12x4 on my 46fx gives me great flight characteristics on a variety of planes.
Lastly, are you sure you're flying your Ultrastick down to stall speed? I've got a friend who for a long time would land his Big Stick hot, and I mean hot. He always said he was worrying about stalling it on landing. He finally played around several mistakes high and realized he was nowhere near stalling it on landing, and now floats it in nice and slow... most of the time.

My ultra stick turned out a little heavy at the nose about 1 1/2-2 oz. but I replace the spiner with a prop nut and lighter prop. and got it blance with 3/4 oz toward the rear. Thanks for all the help

I just read your post.
Do you have a PIC of the ultra stick?
I just went through the TH catalog but didn't see it there unless I zipped through the pages to fast.
From MikeL's post it seems that this is some sort of aerobatic aircraft ?

Whirley,
Big is right! The Ultra stick is made by Hanger 9 sold at Horizon. I guess you could say Horrizon Hobby and Tower Hobbies are like Ford and Chevy in that they only sale contracted brand name. Horrizon will never sale OS egine, or Futaba radio and Tower Hobbies Will never sale MDS engine or JR radio. : o )

I have the URL and i'll look it up.

I just looked at the ultra stick.
The 60 looks real nice with the colors but to much for me.
I Ultrastick 40 is more for me.
It's got everything I need as far as aerobatics go.
Prices are good also.
How long did it take you to build up the last 10%??

Whirley it didnt take long at all to build but if your like me who has never had to mess with mixing channels that part can take a bit longer then building the plane hehehe. Its one of the most well finish ARF that I've bought and thats not to say that their isn't others out there that are well made but everything fit almost if not perfect. The best part is that for the price($130 or less) all you would need to finish it is small bottle of epoxy(5 minutes kind will do) and ca glue and radio(7 ch for crazy speed spin) and engine of your choice.

Well I have the money for the plane.
I have the radio and the receiver.
I have the OS 46-L
I have the epoxy
All I need are the xtals and servos.
Sure looks like a nice project.
I looked at the bigger one where it showed the covering that you can see through.-----NICE
I think I'm going to go for the smaller one though.
The 60 is just a bit to big for me.
Thanks for the input

I changed a few things with mine. One was the fuel tank, and that was after having the stock one split. I should have listened from the start...
I placed my battery as far back in the tail as I could, because I wanted an aft CG. One thing quiet a few people mentioned was reinforcing the landing gear block, but I didn't find it necessary. Mine just kisses the ground when it lands, and I really do want to keep it as light as possible. Before this next season I'll be replacing the metal motor mount with something lighter, both to move the CG further back and lower the weight just a bit more.

YES DO THIS!!! A soft landing and a bit bumpy is ok! I was messing around in the back yard taxing her around at very slow speed and hit a small hole that I didn't see and the thing riped right off. The prop hit the grond and didn't even have a ding but the landing block well... I don't think the wood they use for it is strong enought and it split in two. It was an easy fix with expoxy and now its fine. Epoxy maybe a 1/8 sheet of plywood just in case? I am going to reinforce the wing too just in case. Other then that she a nice plane for the price.
