6 or 8

I was wondering if a 6 oz fuel tank is big enough for my trainer with a K&B .40? The new 6 oz i just bought still leaves alot of room in the compartment. i might be able to fit an 8 oz. Would a 6 oz still give me ample flying time?

I've read that at full throttle a .40 will burn about 1 oz per minute,,and you are rarely at full throttle with a trainer other than take off,,closer to half throttle so I would guess you would have an easy 10 minute flight with the 6 oz tank...ah you need to practice your deadsticks anyway, besides 10 minutes is a good while to fly...Rog

depends on what you want,
my avistar had the factory 10 1/2 oz tank with an o.s. 40LA. while i probably shouldn't have, i flew at full throttle most of the time (a habit i've been trying to break ever since.
) i could fly 15+ minutes on a tank of fuel. after i traded it to another flyer he made the remark that "this plane makes its own fuel, i'm never gonna run out."
one other thing, what type trainer do you have?

In my experience 6oz should be fine. I've run a trainer with a 6oz tank and OS40 LA and I don't think I've ever run it dry. It does swing a big prop though (for a 40LA) and i expect that keeps the fuel consumption down a bit...

The rule of thumb that I use is to use a 8 oz. tank for 40 engines and a 10 oz. for 46 engines. As mentioned above this will easily give me 10 minute flight times at full throttle and time to around a few times if I have to to land. I can fly slower but I tend to like high speed turns and followed by whistling high speed passes. If you are training I guess it depends on how much flying time you want for each flight. Usually 10 minutes is plenty before you need a break in which case the 8 oz. tank would be fine. [8D]

the k&b 40 is not a thirsty engine compared to todays engines back when they were designed a .60 was using an ounce per minute the k&b 40 uses less than 1/2 an ounce per minute at full throtle so a 6 ox tank is good for about 12 minutes at full bore, but with idle and taxing and flying at less than full throtle will probably give about 15 minutes of run time.the 8 oz tank would be about 20 minutes.how long can you look up with out getting a stiff neck?

i would use a 8oz if you haven't got the 6 installed yet or still in the building stages, its just an option you can always land whenever you want to.but running out of fuel you have to land.

Well it's a GP trainer 40. Don't think it's been sold for along time. It would think it's close to their PT 40. It seems there's alot of different opinions on fuel comsumptions, (which is good and bad for me). I just had an idea
. I'm reassembling my K&B and wanted to bench run it to be sure she's setup ok. I'll use the 6 oz tank and time the fuel comsumption. That would give me an idea of what size to install.
Thanks

nice trainer, built many of them from scratch for new club members over 22 years ago. That thick symetrical wing will allow advanced aerobatics and handles windy wheather well,k&b 40 will fly it just fine,I did replace that stamped aluminum main gear with 5/32 music wire in a torsion gear set up as used in the goldberg falcon, works better on grass and rough fields.let me know if you want the info to make the mods, all you need is some 1/4 birch ply and some 1/8 birch ply and 5/32 mw
