Default How small a plane for a .40 engine? (reasonably)

Instead of putting a bigger engine on a .40 plane I want to go the other way.

Right now I run a diesel .40 on my Big Stik and it is fun but will not quite hover. It slowly begins to slide backwards...

So instead of put a .60 on it I want a smaller plane because I really like this OS LA .40 diesel conversion.

So what sporty plane can I put my engine on and have enough power for unlimited vertical climbing?

I'll weight my current Big stick and post it here latter. That will help... I'm guessing I need a plane under 5 lbs for sure though.

chevy43,

It all depends on the weight, not the size. If your current plane will almost, but not quite, hover, I'd guess your next plane should weigh at least 25-30% less. The high performance 3D planes have thrust/weight ratios of nearly 2:1. Hope that helps.

chevy, I'm not a diesel guy so take this for what it's worth... as I understand diesel conversions they give more torque and swing a larger prop than on glow... I'm guessing your putting out about the power of a 50ish 4 stroke motor... if this is correct then you'll need to stay close to 4 lb to get what you want. Most any of the profiles will get you close to this weight and perform well... another choice would be this plane http://www.hobbypeople.net/gallery/123740.asp what ever you chose try and keep it close to 4lb AUW.

I stuck a .46LA on my 48" Model Tech Extra 300 ARF, which is designed for a .30 engine.

The cowl has plenty of space and you'll have no problems with the .40LA Diesel.

You should get unlimited verticles.

The plane hovers at 50% throttle.

Thanks opjose,

I bought a 48" EDGE 540 today for $75 and picked it up so no shipping.

Hope I can get my .40 in it.

I don't think you'll have a problem.

At worst angle mount the engine at about 45 degrees, head down, so that the muffler lines up with the fuselage centerline or thereabouts.

This puts the head out to the left leaving it partially exposed to the airflow.

Cut the cowl intakes for proper cooling.

You should have a blast with that combination. It should be a very good flyer.

Looks like a better deal than the Extra 300.
