I'm lookin for a good second plane for a winter project. 40-60 size. arf or easy built kit. This is going to be my second plane so I am lookin for a good easy flier , but I have no idea what to get. Your opinions would be greastly appreciated , thanks, Nick

Have you looked thru the different suppliers sites or catalogs and found a few styles of planes you like ? A more advanced high wing or a low wing trainer ?

Nick, if you want a more advanced high wing, an Avistar with a 46 is a nice step.

For a winter project, an ARF isn't going to provide you with much to do after the first week or so. You might consider a kit build. A 4* 60 is a good recommendation as a first kit. It is well engineered, good materials, excellent construction manual, and you end up with a great flying airplane that is uniquely yours and not a clone of all the others. Plus there are many good build posts of this model on RCU.

I'd also consider a Bruce Tharp Venture 60. Great kit, builds well, and fly's beautifully. Easy take-offs, does beginning aerobatics well, and lands slowly.

The Sig Somethin Extra is a great building second airplane. There are a ton of posts here regarding this plane and several build threads too. I wouldn't hesitate to build another of these ... laser cut goodness, I tell you.

BTW, RCKen did a magnificant job documenting the build of a Trainer plane (Sig LT-40) over the course of several months. I'd highly recommend checking out that thread (do a search) - even a seasoned builder can learn a thing or two from that build thread.

Thanks for the posts guys, its gonna be awhile till I make a decision now. I really like the venture 60 , but it looks like it would be hard for me to build, just because I don't have the knowledge of building yet. But I also have to start somewhere. Oh the decisions, maybe I'll just buy them all , hahahahaha (I wish) But atleast I have some insight on what to look for.

For a Kit: Great Planes P-51 or Corsair. Both are easy to fly. For an ARF: The Harmon Rocket. Good Luck.

The responses you have gotten are what people like for a second plane. If you gave us some idea where you want to go with R/C aeromodeling we might be able to point you in the right direction. You want to move into 3D aerobatics... get a U-Can Do. You want scale warbirds... concider the H9 P-51 PTS. You want to just sport fly around... World Models Sky Raider Mach II. You want to move toward patern aerobatics... Probably the Sig 4 Star would be the best choice. I do recomend an inexpensive ARF though. If you want a winter project, build your third plane. Your second plane has about a 90% chance of not surviving next season due to the fact that you will be unleashed and exploring just what you can do. So keep it cheap is my recomendation. It will break your heart to rekit (crash) your first kit build that soon.

My second was a Goldberg Tiger 60. Low wing with a slight dihedral. Very nice flying plane, and I still have it and still fly it after several years. Large so it is very visible which is a good thing.

Another, the Sig Four Star 40 (as mentioned above) is a great one, but I would think the larger version, Four Star 60, would be a tad bit easier to fly but has all the capabilities of the smaller 40 sized plane but is more visible (larger).
