Default Edge 540 25 as second plane?

Hey guys, i knew here, but have been flying a hobistar 60 with a .61 os engine for a while. I am looking for a second plane now. I have a 0.25 os engine laying around that i would like to put on a plane. Any experience with this plane? How hard is it to fly?

Any other suggestions for 0.25 powered planes? Thanks everyone

Justin

Not a good second plane, but some people advance more quickly than others.

Small planes are very snappy. I like them for that reason. Your big 60 size trainer is lathargic in comparison giving you a lot of time to recover and think through a manouver. The small plane like that edge will do 5 aileron roles in the time it takes to do one with your trainer. If you are flying wide open with that Edge and snap the elevator stick back expecting a loop I bet it would just do a snap roll ending in a downward spiral. Are you ready for that? If so, and you may be, go for it. The plane is cheap but I am sure it requires mini or even micro servos and you will find them more expensive than your standard servos. The extra cost of the servos plus that plane would buy a nice 60 size sport plane that you could just transfer the gear out of your trainer. I would recomend the Hangar 9 Ultra Stick 60 as it will be a very capable fun to fly plane that lands like a trainer. Here is a link.

thanks a lot guys. I would rather not take the engine out of my trainer as i still like flying it. Does anyone have suggestions for a plane that can use my .25os?

H-9 makes an electric or .25 powered ultra-stick...see if that will work with your little engine. Sticks are the best second planes, IMHO.

The 25e size Ultra Stick that agexpert refers to would be my choice for that engine. It is designed to be an electric flyer so you would be doing a conversion. Thus if you are not comfortable cutting and modifying a brand new ARF then don't get started with it. Here is a link.

If you want to fly that Edge 540 as a second plane, set it up with about half the aileron and elevator control surface movement that the kit recommends (they assume advanced pilots) and balance it with the CG slightly more nose heavy than the kit recommends. Often instead of a CG location, they will have a CG range, use the nose heavy end of that CG range. Make a plane nose heavy enough and limit the elevator throw enough and you won't be able to snap roll the plane on purpose. Just because a plane can be set up to do wild 3-D flying does't mean it has to be set up that way.
Also, make sure you are really ready for your second plane. Did you just get off of the buddy cord? Or do you routinely grease it in while landing and can fly the pattern inverted. A lot of people think that the perfect time to get a more advanced plane is when they crash the trainer.

Thanks everyone for the info. B.L.E., good information on the 540. I never actually used a buddy cord, i learned on an electric (40" wingspan of so) plane with no alerons, then moved to my .61 trainer. Ive been flying about 50% of the time upside down with no problems. Its not that i really want to do crazy 3d tricks right now, i just wanted a fun plane to put the .25 on. I like the idea of making the control throws much less than recomended. I will have to consider all this information, thanks agian.
