Default Servo Installation

Hi All,
Can someone please tell me a good way how to install the servos in a balsa plane?
My concern is to avoid that the screws will loose up.

thanks in advance!

Default RE: Servo Installation

Position you servo and mark where you want the servo screws to be located at. Remove the servos and drill a 1/16" hole in each location. Use your servo mount screw and screw it into the hole you just drilled to cut the threads into the wood. Remove the screw and then wick some thin CA into the hole. This will harden the threads you cut so that they won't pull out. Make sure the CA is completely cured before you install you servo.

Hope this helps

Ken

Put a small piece of 1/8 ply behind the balsa, cut it to about 1/4" wide by 1" long and CA it in place under the balsa where the screws go, along the inside edge of the balsa. Then drill the holes for the servo using the servo as a template... drill a 1/16" hole. Put a drop of CA in the drilled hole, blow into the hole to clear the hole of excessive CA. Then when the CA cures, put your servo screws in. Make sure that the grommet that comes with all new servo's is in place with the metal (brass) collar facing the right direction (which is with the bevel end down... the bevel end touches the balsa not the screw head). This allows the screw to bottom out on the brass collar and not on the rubber shock mount. This will hold forever.

Install hardwood rails or plywood mounting plate supported by side rails. When you drill the mounting holes don't make them too big or the screws will work loose and/or not get a good bite into the wood. Before installing the screws run a couple of drops of thin CA into each hole and let it cure thoroughly (no accelerator) before installing screws. This will toughen the wood. After the CA you may need to redrill to clean up the holes but not a big deal. Plywood should be 1/8" minimum and 3/16" thick preferred.

Cyano Acrolate (spelling) Super glue thin

No, not epoxy for hardening the wood/holes. OK for mounting the wood.

The brand is not too important as long as it is super glue and not thread locker.

Be advised that there are two types of CA. Foam Safe CA and standard CA. Use the Foam Safe CA for foamie electrics. If you use regular CA on foam.. well, it dissolves the stuff and will pretty much ruin your whole day.
