I don't know about a second plane. It will be my third/fourth. I started on a high wing flat bottom trainer, then a high wing trainer with a semi-symetrical wing, and now a low wing plane. I have my Skybolt all ready to go except for breaking in the engine. I plan to get a lot more experience on the low wing plane first and then get someone experienced with flying a bipe to help me for the first few flights.

Thanks, that's good to know. I didn't fly my low wing plane for the longest time because I was unsure of my abilities, and when I did it was a piece of cake. I think it will be the same with this plane, just being overly cautious.

The FS-70 II is generally for .40 sized models. If you intend to add a smoke system, you should consider using the FS-91 II instead. A lot more power for only $40 extra.

I wonder why Tower does,nt offer the Combo with a 91 . Maybe because they claim the ARF is lighter than the kit ?
Congrats on your Skybolt. I hope to order mine is a few weeks. I bought the engine first , a Saito 100 , will this be over powering the plane ?

Barely - I'm pretty wiped out.
Now I've got tons of video to download and edit so you guys can see what we saw!

I think both Mike and I are suffering from PTS (Post Toledo Syndrome). Going back to work isn't sounding too good for either of us right now!!!!!

blkz2801, this skybolt is my first try with a smoke system and I do have evrything done now but the engine. I am going to order it today. Since this is my first try with smoke I will not give any advice until I give it a test run and see how it does. How I have my smoke system ran, IMO, looks like it will work great but only time will tell. Also look up the thread "Got Smoke" if you have not done so already and it is the way I ran my system. Maybe this weekend I will let you guys know how it goes.

We appreciate your and Ken sacrafice and will gladly step up and take on a dose of PTS for you next year. lol
Glad to hear you 2 had a good time. Keeping an eye on MinnFlyer is a full time job, I `d better go with you next year for back up.

It was a grueling trip, but just knowing you guys appreciate it makes all that hard work worthwhile.
So many models - So little time (Sigh)

Brooke,
I just finished my Skybolt, with a O.S. FS-91 four stroke. I used the Futaba R168DF, S3004 servos w/ 6 volt battery, @ 6v you have 57 ounce-inches of tork with no problms.
Yes you can use the S3010 servos instead, I'm running the S3010 in my Showtime @ 6 volts because of the size of the surfaces and I wanted the higher tork and speed.
To answer your question "why one is better than the other", the way I see it , it really comes down to operating speed (go with 6.0V), no load stall torque, motor type (coreless or 3 Pole Ferrite), bearing type (ball bearing is better) and last but not least gear type (nylon or metal)..
Like a lot of bi planes mine was a bit tail heavy. So test fit your radio gear , smoke system and battery before you deside on a location. Your going to what to get as much weight up towards the nose as possible. Using the recommended CG I needed to add about a once of lead on the firewall.

BigDuke1, thanks for the information. I do have everything installed minus the engine. Nothing is set in stone right now, because I need to get the engine mounted and then see where I need to go from for the CG. I just think I have everything in the best place right now, but like I said I am willing to move stuff around to get the best CG if needed.

Maidened my Skybolt yesterday! I was so nervous about it the plane sat in the car half the day while I flew other planes and when I finally got it out and together it sat for a long time waiting on me. Finally at the end of the day I fueled it up and took off. The initial climbout was pretty hairy. I balance it right but when fueled up and in the air it seemed quite nose heavy the way it flew, I had to add a lot of up elevator.
I flies beautifully though. It tracks nice and straight, loops and rolls nice. I took it up high and took the power off and fed in elevator and the nose dropped gently then a wing dropped but it was very gentle and easy to recover from. Best thing is it lands like a dream. It bleeds off speed much faster than any of my other planes so I needed to keep some power on, but it settles in so nice and easy.
On my P-51 PTS I put a two blade prop on and removed the wing droops and couldn't land it to save my life yesterday. It needed a lot more time to slow down on approach. Landing the Skybolt was much easier.
Your going to love this plane when you get it in the air.

Pkevinb, that is great to hear. I am glad you had a good flight. I am still waiting for my engine to come in, they told me it will be this Monday. I will let you all know how it goes for me as well once I get it up.

Hey guys. I'm currently building my Skybolt and posted a build question over in the ARF forum with no response really. Guess all the Skybolters are hanging out here. Please help, my question is what screws did you all used to bolt on the control horns on the ailerons and did you all used the square nylon back plate? The supplied 2 x 1/2in screws supplied in the kit come up way short and don't push through the aileron enableing the back plate to be used. All every ARFs that I've built, I've used them. Not sure if I trust those sheet metal screw all alone with no back plate. What did you all do and use?? Thanks,,,

Screws, that's what I intended on saying. So, you used the screws on the control horn only and no backing plate??
Minn, no backing plate huh? Geeezzzz, I've already drilled through the ailerons?
