Hi all. I've been lurking here for a while and learning lots, so I hope you can help me.

My electric starter is a hand-me-down antique of indeterminate age but still works fine. Lately the rubber cone insert has started shredding a bit, so I found a new replacement that looks to be just the right size. Is there any trick to replacing these things?

I can see the starter has three tabs that fit into three grooves in the outside of the cone, and there's a nut flush with the bottom of the cup. Tugging (not too hard) on the old cone doesn't seem to move it. Is this a friction fit, is there glue involved, or what?

On my Sullivan, which has lasted for many, many years, it's a friction fit. I regularly flip the cone around, depending on if what I'm starting has a spinner or not, or if I need the helicopter starting shaft.

No glue needed. What brand is it and model if you can?

I can find no brand or model markings on the starter itself. It has a black motor case with yellow handguard and trim. It is at least 10 and probably more like 20 years old.

The replacement cone is a blue Sullivan.

Very similar. The handguard is a bit different, and there's no label.

The insert is probably just stuck from being in the cup for many years. Before you order a new insert, measure the inside diameter of the cup. There are at least two sizes.
