Default Trainer that would eventually lead up to flying a Piper J-3 Cub

Hi Everyone,

I am fresh new to this hobby. A friend of my parents used to be very involved in the hobby and a built piper J-3 cub was given to me by the friend that passed away by complications. He was going to teach me how to fly an rc plane this summer. It came with a 4+ channed Expert radio (I have no idea if this radio can work with a buddy box) with futaba s3003 servos, and a Super Tigre .61 engine. I am trying to think about what kind of trainer plane that I could buy in which the step up plane is the J-3 cub. I would like to use the servos and the engine some how in a ARF plane such as the Hobbico Hobbistar or the Tower Hobbies trainer.

What to you all recommend? I am way in over my head and I have a lot of learning to do. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

1-Find a nearby field
2-Stop and meet new friends
3-Let them help and suggest next step.(Finding trainer plane either new or used)
4-Learn on a buddy box with a trainer
5-Be hooked on RC for life!!!!

Have fun and welcome to the most fun you can have with your clothes on.

Del

welcome to the hobby. first off the nextstar is or another similar trainer would be suitable(search towerhobbies.com). Look at the back of your radio there should be some holes, about 6 close together, give or take a couple. As pierce said, find a club. This will be your biggest step, there you will get instructors with uddy boxes to help you. Then have fun!

Either of those ARFs would work well in the 60 size variety. Also if you are a builder and can kit build a plane get a Carl Goldberg Piper Cub kit and build it with some dihedral in the wing and it becomes a very stable Piper Cub. I flew one with an OS 60 for a while and it got me used to tail draggers.

dertwosubsw2,

This is slightly unrelated, but I see that you are close to Toledo.

I would highly recommend that you visit the Weak Signals Toledo Expo next week. You can learn a lot, but moreover it is an amazing event that will dazzle you.

LMAO...You are trying to set the hook deep in this new R/Cer....LOL

By all means, go to Toledo if at all possible. It's the premier R/C exposition of all time! Just remember to take a bib and a roll of paper towels. Drooling in uncontrolable! You will learn so much there. It is April 13, 14 and 15, I believe.

Thanks for the advise guys. I wish I can go to Toledo and I wish I could go ever since I got into RC cars. I live at the Ohio State University for school. I have midterms to study for next week.[&o]. Does the Hobbico Nexstar adaptable with a .60 engine?

I have been thinking about the Nexstar because of the the awsome package of quality items in the package but I would like to try to save some money and use what I have.

I have found you can do just about anything with these planes but putting a 60 on a Nexstar would require cutting the side, foux cowels off and re-drilling the firewall for a larger motor mount. I would not even concider it unless you planned to put the plane on floats but even then it would be easier to put a 50 or 55 on it. You do not need all the extra "Bling" that comes with the Nexstar... and this is comming from a pilot that learned to fly on a Nexstar. Spend about $100 on a used simulator and get one of the two 60 sized trainers you mentioned... Locate a reliable club/instructor and get busy flying.
