It's kind of cool looking. I have a couple of buddies who are "everything but the kitchen sink" kind of guys when it comes to what they take with them out to the field. It's a nice stand and plane cradle as well as having storage for more than enough tools. If it breaks down into a suitcase size for carrying, I'd say that's pretty neat. I sure as hell wouldn't lug anything around that big though, can you imagine what it would weight with a battery and a gallon of fuel?

Too funny - I happen to have one of these too so I'm not sure of the "hand-made by a custom craftsman" part. These were widely available in the '80's (yes, I'm old) and I have mine since then. It really is VERY well made, mine is holding up well after 20+ years. It weighs a ton and could use some wheels!

Those have been out for a long time-There made by custom woodcraft. I had 1 too way back in the 80's when I worked at futaba. I think you can get 1 here.

the last 1 for sale here had a asking price of $60
http://www.rcuniverse.com/market/item.cfm?itemId=269986
The seller on ebay says he paid $450 for his?? I wonder how many airplanes-radio's that included? or maybe he misplaced a decimal and meant $45.00
There only $150 or $175 for the xlarge. oohh wait the seller has only been on ebay for 4 days-that explains it.

hmm you mean it folds into a suitcase as well? what happens if it also folds out even more and in actuality it can get much bigger than what they showed on the pictures...

http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...&I=LXELN9&P=ML Maybe it's a compromise you can live with, and you build it yourself. Takes half the time of a typical .40 size ARF, not counting the painting time you have to do. I used a spray can polyurethane covering for the wood on mine, and wished I used a brush instead. It didn't hold up. The castor mist each week it gets is helping it best I think.

When I first started a few months ago, a guy at our field give me one exactly like this. I took it home and put everything in it to see what the weight was. It was extremely heavy!! Needless to say it found its place in my shop holding tools, and being used as a plane rest when Im working on my plane.

IMHO, an appropriate field box is an old duffel bag and a charger that works on my car battery. Now that I am flying gas only, I don't even bother with that much stuff. Just a couple of hex drivers and a gas can with attached hand-crank pump. I still carry a charger, but it's a 3 inch cube that will charge li-ions and li-poly, 5 at a time.
These huge, museum-quality boxes are nice. They are well crafted and sturdy, however, if you truly just want to learn to fly, you must get stick-time. In order to get as much stick-time as possibe, you will want to travel light. I ditched my field boxes in favor of an old duffel bag and never looked back.
Take what you need and nothing more. Fly as much as possible and let others bring a hobby-shop to the field. Some people like to tinker more than they like to fly, there is room in this hobby for all of us. Just depends on what you want to do.
