Default Seagull AT6 Texan

Hi guys. I've just bought a Seagull AT6 Texan and the recommended engine size is .46 - .52 2S or .72 - .82 4S. The model should weigh in around 3.5kg ( ~7.5 lbs for our American friends). I was originally going to put a Saito 82 FS in it but I've read lots of reports about this being a very thirsty engine. The fuel tank provided is only 200cc (7oz) which would give me a flying time of around 7-8 minutes. Would an OS 70 FS have enough power to fly this decently and any idea what the fuel consumption is for it?

Thanks

Shane

G'day Shane,
The Saito would be perfect for the Texan, & they are not thirsty, I have flown one on a Tucano, use the recomended prop for running in, I think it is a 13x8 or a 14x6, run it in as per instructions, Beautiful engine.
Also there would be no need to fly at full throttle, so you should have plenty of flight time.
Check out this Saito site, lots of great info here. http://saito-engines.info/prop_sizes.html

Thanks for that Allan. I was hoping to use the Saito seeing as you can get it cheaper than an OS 70.

cheers

fuel consumption is gonna vary pretty much directly with RPM and displacement. Also, nitro content. More nitro content = richer fuel mixture = more thirsty

Hi Shane, Initially, I assembly my seagull At-6 Texan 40 size(wingspan 62 inches, fulselage 51 inches) with ASP 70 four stroke engine and use 12 X 8 APC propeller . During maiden fly, it look like the tail is heavy but i still able for safe landing(but cowling crack a litle and canopy broken but repairable). Therefore i use CG gauge to measure 5-6 cm (base on the manual book) from the wing leading edge. I found up it took approxiamately 200g weight to balance this plane. Therefore I change the engine to Magnum 91 four stroke and landing gear's wheel to 2 3/4 inch and add another 150g to fire wall to balance the CG (I used 6.5 cm) and the fuel tank remain unchanged. On full throttle it fly approximately 5 minute 40 second but I usually fly 1 minute full throttle(take off) 7 minute half throttle and 1 minute for landing and spare another 1 minute for emergency. I use 14 X 6 MA propeller.

Shane since you posted this in the beginners section. I hope you haven't made the mistake of thinking that since the Texan was a trainer it would make a good RC trainer. It won't. The Texan is a warbird. If you're a beginner get an RC trainer

spent a few days in your country some 25 years ago. I found it to be a very enjoyable place. I swear the friendliest people on earth.
Hopefully I'll get to return.

Mate it's a great place to live. Not too pretty at the moment with the worst drought in a long time over most of the country. Gloabl warming and all you know.... probably from RC modellers burning too much Nitro!!

wkchow88, thanks for the info. I'm going to use the Saito 82 so that should help balance it out.

cheers
