Do you have a club to join and an instructor lined up? If not, then find one before you buy anything.
Just one of the reasons is that an instructor will be able to tell you what frequencies are the most used ones so there will be less of a chance of you waiting to fly because others have the same radio frequency. They will also be able to provide you with more suggestions and recommendations on fuel, field kit, etc.

as suggested, get to a club and speak with the people there, if you turn up with a big .46 gasser and they are flying park flyers your going to look like a bit of a plank :P

also id recomend a high-wing trainer, high-wings have self-righting charecteristics and are very stable and easier to land/takeoff with. afterall, the P-51 is still a warbird no matter how many gadgets they put on it

get yourself a decent trainer such as the tower hobbies .40 trainer, a SIG kadet Senior or another decent well-built trainer, a reliable .40 or .46 engine (depending on how big your bird is) such as the OS .46LA, then a good quality radio set (Futaba 6EXAP is £120 and has RX, battery, switch, servos and everything you need to get going radio-wise) and that should about do a quart of 5% fuel and organise a time at your flying field when you can get a senior member/instructor to check over your plane and then your on your way! :P

If your instructor is willing to teach you on it then go for it. But by all means, DO NOT try to fly this alone.

Is the PTS the ARF or RTF version?

Tower has a field starter pack for $119 that has all the required field equipment to get flying. http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...&I=LXL419&P=ML

Read through the first 50 or so pages of the P-51 PTS ***Trainer*** thread in the ARF/RTF section for all the necessary prep and mods.
1. Remove speed brakes (seems to be the consensus by everyone)
2. secure the antenna
3. reinforce the wing saddle area
4. Fuel proof the fire wall
5. locktite all exposed threads
6. May want to have the aileron servo mounts checked along with the landing gear area for weakness.
7. Unless you will be transporting it with the wing off, buy the charge jack for quickly charging without having to remove the wings. http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...&I=LXJ778&P=ML
8. Buy a exhaust deflector (RTF version) http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...&I=LXL378&P=ML
9. Your instructor should give the plane a complete inspection, tune the engine, and maiden the plane for you

Get what you like but you said something about making your days at the field more enjoyable...then get a high wing trainer, there are so many things wrong with the P-51 PTS in the hands of a student. Just look at how far forward the landing gear is, I've seen alot of them broken inside the wing.
Go to your local field first as was said earlier, talk with them

The one i was looking at is the RTF version, and i was planning on heading out to the fields this week to talk with a few people there to see what they think and to see if someone there would be willing to help get me started. There are 6 fields all within a one hour drive so i should gain alot of info.

Cougar, here is what I am doing. I bought the H9 Arrow ARF ($114) and the P-51 PTS RTF ($399). I have moved the trainer engine, receiver and battery from the PTS to the Arrow as it calls for the same gear. In this way I can take my time getting my PTS ready for flight and also learn a little modeling along the way. I am in the process of fuel proofing the PTS, along with the other necessary mods. I will be installing a new engine and radio gear. By the time I am ready to fly the PTS I will hopefully have had many flights on my Arrow.

If the extra trainer isn't an option, then please just take your time and buddy box along with some simulator time. In reading the entire PTS thread, I saw many guys post when they bought the PTS and they were all happy... Three pages later they posted crash pics of a destroyed airplane. I am not saying you can't learn on a PTS because a lot of people have, just saying do it right. Read the PTS thread until you know who EDS, G-Pete, olstoney, opjose, Pit-Viper1, nightmare, kahlog, etc are. They and many others are responsible for a wealth of info.

I agree with Showtime. Just remember you are going to crash. Its inevitable and part of the hobby. You can grab any high wing ARF and just swap your gear out of the PTS. You won't need much gear if you go to a club, most members will help you out as you get started.

This would be enough to get you going. http://www.ehobbies.com/ttr3002.html The evolution trainer series flip starts easily.

If you got a few extra bucks, I would get 4 extra servos at 9 bucks each for your High wing. If you got a Tower Hobbies 40 with 4 hitec 311 servos you would still be cheaper than a Hanger 9 Arrow ARF.

Good Luck
