Default Dremel Issues - help!

My cordless dremel 7.2v multipro has 2 speeds. Suddenly only the low speed works and not the high. Could it be a connection issue since the switch actually moves the connectors to different points in the battery. Last week I drilled 2 holes onto steel until I got a drill, hope that didnt messup the dremel!

Also,
What would be the BEST (and not too expensive) dremel tool /setup for a RC hobby workshop?!

And a silly question, Can a drilling machine be used for sanding, grinding , cutting into wood/ metal etc or is the only thing that can go into the chuck is drill bit? I have a ryobi drill costed $30.

And, I have to shorten the width of a steel engine mount which is about 2mm thick . I need to remove about 2to3mm on the side. Do I sand it with the dremel or cut it? Whats most effective?

Thanks--747

My chorded Dremel cost me about $50 is variable speed and came with a bunch of different bits. I have seen them on sale for as low as $30.
The drill can work to some extent but the speed is much slower so it won't be near as effective as a high speed tool like the Dremel.

Each tool has it's best tasks. Both are useful. Dremel sells replacement parts at reasonable prices. Home Depot used to carry some, may still. If not try LHS or mail order or Dremel online.
Start with a manual

Order parts from

Switch P/N for 2 speed is 2610912829
Cost unknown.

Dremel used to have one of the best customer service there was, back in 71 I had a variable dremel that stopped working a year or so after opurchase, sent it back to dremel and they fixed it and replaced the case as the hanging hook on the rear was broken and returned it for no charge.

I was giving a "worst case scenario". If he thinks there is a chance for warranty he can call the number I gave above and discuss it with them.

The best tool for modifying the engine mount might be an ordinary file. It is not fast but it is easy to control. A sanding drum mounted in the dremel, or drill, would probably work. It will heat the metal, which may or may not cause problems.

I'd probably try putting a switch in the current tool; or maybe it's still under warranty. If buying a new cordless tool I'd go for the 10.8 volt variable speed kit. $70 with free shipping.

For a corded tool:
This set is $120 (with free shipping) and would be my first choice
http://www.amazon.com/Dremel-400-6-9...4958860&sr=1-1
Second would be the $84 (with free shipping) set:
http://www.amazon.com/Dremel-3956-02...4958860&sr=1-3
Both are variable speed and have the flex shaft, which is really nice to have.

I've ordered a couple of tools from Amazon. They're not always cheapest, but often they are. Many items have free shipping and delivery time on my orders was just a few days.

I have been though two of the battery powereed models and will never buy another battery powered Dremel. Go for the corded model.

I've been using my corded variable speed Dremel tool for over 20 years now without a single hiccup, probably one of the handiest tools in the box. I have to agree though with carrellh, sometimes the best tool is a hand tool. It may be slower, but I find I like the finese of an ordinary file depending on the task at hand. A nice set of small jewelers files and a couple of smaller machine files in different shapes makes for a worthy addition to your modelers tool box.

I have the Lithium powered Dremel and it's a very capable tool. But any of the other battery powered Dremels are pretty much junk

I had a power-cord powered Dremel. For some reason, the thing just stopped working. I called them, they told me to send it to them and they would replace it. So, I did and they did. I got a new Dremmel power-cord Dremel and I still have it and use it regularly.

What this tells me is that they WILL support what they sell.

I just put this in another post but, i smoked my dremel that i have had for about 20 years the other day trying to cut lite ply with the abrasive wheel. it melted the coupling between the motor and the head of the tool. it was toast when i opened it up. it kind of looks like a small plastic version of a slipyoke on a driveshaft. I just put what was left of it back together after a good cleaning of melted peices out of the case and used some jb weld. works good again. who knows how long it will live. but like i said this thing has seen 20 years of hard use. I think i already got my money's worth out of it!!! maybe it needs a blowproof bellhousing like they use in drag cars now in case it frags itself again? oh and the clencher is i looked at the parts breakdown in the manual attached in this thread and that is the one piece that is not listed. it is shown, but no listing for it.

The best rotary tool is a Fordom Flex Shaft. Yeah, I know it is a flex shaft, but that hasn't really been an issue, if setup corectly. They are rock solid, and industrail strength. I'm an ex jeweler, and I have two units that I have personaly used for for 13 years and both were well used when I aquired them. When I say I used them, they got four or five hours use a day. If you get one with the #35 hand piece, it will take any rotary tool or drill from 0.000" to 3/16" shaft. There are a number of handpieces to chose from from not very expensive to well over $200. I have one that is artuclated and is a quick change, a flip of a lever and the tool is relased, flip it back and the new tool is locked. The only draw back is that you are limited to 3/32" shaft tools. Actually that isn't much of an issue, but you have to buy from a jewelry/dental supplier. Your local hardware store isn't going to be able to provide you with tools.

Check Ebay, Rio Grande Tools, and other places. Harbor Freight has a knock off but I don't know about the quality of them, I've never had one in hand.

I have replaced the motor coupling several times with a short piece of 1/4" neoprene fuel tubing.
