Hi Gents & Ladies,
I live in Hawaii , on Kauai actually, and am interested in flying gliders. So far I have only flown at fields like housing tracts in progress. abandoned cane fields, etc. So I am wondering if anyone knows of anyone, anyplace, that I could fly here on Kauai.

that's an easy one. go to the windward side. find a nice cliff (preferably with some grass or beach at the bottom and somewhere to land on top) if you have flown before and know how to fly already, just toss off into the wind and you should have a ton of lift along the edge of the cliff. you need a spot where the wind blows into the face of the cliff. this will give you lift along the edge of the cliff. you can fly till the batteries die! check out the slope soaring section here, and i am sure the guys there will give you tons of useful info. what plane are you flying? even the thermal type gliders will do ok, just don't try it the first time out when the trades are howling.

I lived down near poipu for a while when i was a kid. I am jealous. you have tons of great slope soaring sites there and ideal conditions. I live in NC now, and there isn't a good cliff around for 1000 miles! my slope soarers stay in the closet.

Ahh yes if only it were that easy. I have found a lot of places that would make wonderfull sloper sites. Butt there has always been some drawback of some kind, Safety, to close to a road, powerlines, no place to land, etc.

Bad Daddy, I tried the search as you suggested but Hawaii is not even in the list of states. Oh well the price of living in Paradise, I guess.

Aloha Leslie. Well the Island of Flowers has no place to land huh? You could always take a hopper to The Big Island or Oahu. Oahu has the North Shore to fly from Here were 2 fields that I found http://www.rcuniverse.com/community/locatorsearch.cfm I just don't know which Island they are. By the way I lived on Oahu. just another thought for ya. for slope action, you don't necssarily have to be on a cliff at the beach. you can also find good slope conditions up on the mountain sides. I know you have pretty thick rainforest in most places there, but if you can find some grassy slopes or even some lava fields. you might have to do some hiking. if all else fails, just head over to tunnels and go surfing instead.

funny part is I grew up surfing there on kauai and live on the east coast of da mainland now. not so much great surf here. plenty farms though. so rc kinda became my substitute for surfing when it's flat.

what size gliders are you talking about that there is no place to land? In GA. we sloped off an army corp of engineers dam with a road running along the top.. Slope in front and terrible rotor over the top and down the back side. we would crab along the hill and drop in for landing... it was nice smooth grass though.. Something fun is to play chicken.. diving toward the water... and seeing how close plane and shadow can come together before [sm=drowning.gif] ... well you get the idea!
