I've put together a list of planes that make good trainers and second planes. All of them on the list are proven planes that are well suited for successfully letting students learn to fly, or advance to a second plane. Check out the list here

Hope this helps

If you can stretch your budget to $85 or so, I'd recommend you take a good look at the Hobbico Flyzone Mini Ventura:

[link=http://video1.hobbico.com/gallery/hca/hcaa2008-2010-deluxe.mpg]Mini Ventura Video[/link]

The Mini Ventura from Hobbico is a solid, stable flier and benefits from being backed by a major manufacturer with regard to warranty support, technical support, and spare parts availability.

Good luck and good shopping.

I guess, if you're looking for Wal Mart style quality it's ok. It's a Fasst3 2 channel. You don't have an elevator, the speed of the plane governs the altitude. If you're wanting to go that route, then I would suggest going to Wal-Mart. The baddias isn't too bad a plane for someone getting into sailplanes (who already knows how to fly). There are a lot of different trainer planes both electric and glow. You should save your money and buy an RTF trainer from Ken's list. If your budget is really kicking you in the butt (it happens to me quite often) you can build planes from corrugated plastic (SPAD). Campaign signs make great airplanes!

If you can go to your local hobby store and talk to them. I bought my father in law a firebird phantom from hobbytown for $60. It has 3 channels and flys good. If you do end up with something like this try to go to the field with someone experienced. The plane flys good but as soon as you get in a slow turn it stalls easily. Now as for gas or electric I am a believer in electric. Not that there is anything wrong with gas except that you cant fly them anywhere. Electric you can go to the local highschool with no trouble.

A good lesson to learn in this hobby is you generally get what you pay for. If you go cheap to begin with, you'll either get quickly frustrated, or quickly bored. There are always ways to afford more, but more importantly, if you can't afford the first plane, you won't be able to afford the repairs.

Balsa planes are actually a much better value than you might initially expect, especially when you start talking repairs. SPADS (www.spadtothebone.com) can also be an economical alternative.

Think of your first plane as an investment, not an expense. Treated correctly (get an instructor), it will pay years of dividends in fun and fellowship with other pilots.

A little more research on this bird and you find that its an acrobatic slope soaring plane - probably a good second plane, but not a good first plane. You're liable to find it very fast for a beginner.
