How do you cut slots for hinges

Would like to know how most of you are cutting the slots to install hinges, both CA and Nylon. I have used robart hinge points but need something that is thinner. Thanks

I use a #11 X-Acto blade to make the initial cut. I take a cut-off wheel in my Dremel tool, and make some back cuts on the back of the blade (about 3 of them) angled from the direction of the point, toward the handle. This in effect makes some saw teeth in the spine of the blade. Then using this modified blade, it is easy to remove the material that I want to cut out of the trailing edge of the wing, or stab. I will try to shoot a pic of the blade, and post it for you. This modified blade removes the wood, rather than just displacing it as it would if you only cut a slot.

G'day Mate,
Buy a Dubro hinge slotter kit, no.660, or make a kit with old hacksaw blades, & a grinder.
I have had a set for 25 years, & it's still the best & easiest way of cutting hinge slots.

The sharp side cuts in, the teeth hog out, and the hook hooks stuff.
I don't know how old this tool is, but it's going to be around a bunch more years.

I use the Dubro hinge slotter kit as well (http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXE229&P=7). Use the blades to mark points for the end of the hinge slot, and then use a No. 11 hobby knife to make the slit. One slot usually takes about 30 seconds to cut by hand. The slotting tool is also good for marking the centerline of the leading edge, making the tool more than a "uni-tasker".

The Great Planes hinge cutting tool is one of the most useful tools ever made for RC. They now make a centering guide for marking the trailing edge as well as a cutting guide for the tool itself. With the different blades available for it, it will cut slots for all the hinges out there except the hinge points. Well worth the investment. Do not mess with the battery operated one as it does not have enough horsepower to do 6 slots before it needs to be recharged. Good Luck, Dave

Yes, of course.
Very carefully package every single part so that it will not break and ship the entire model. I'll get back to you when I've got the work done and TESTED. I test very thoroughly. For years sometimes.

Gee that sounds like a great idea. YEARS????

Yes, I try very hard to insure that you do not have to fly a model with weakly attached hinges. And that could take years, especially if you've purchased a model that performs very well for me.
Trust me, the extra charges for the fuel usage is well worth the money.

I mark the location with a pen. Two dots that indicate each end of the slot to be made. Then drill a tiny hole at each dot. Then cut two slits that connect the two holes. You may need to jam a fingernail file, emory board, in the slot to clean it up a bit.
