Someone had some sort of meter or gauge at the field, they all packed it in,He said it was 27km/h and higher gusts.
I guess that just over 20mph?
Anyway I maidened by BME Hydrofoam (flying boat) it was kinda rough for it,but I have flown my nitro and electric planes in wind just a bit more that it was that day.
Its kinda fun surfing stationary to the ground

I have gone out many a windy day to catch some of that "good air" just before sundown especially in the summer'
OK is it me or has the average wind speeds come up in the last couple of seasons?

Gary from Weatherford in Granbury our field runway runs N.& S. and usually that is the direction of the wind. It is open at both ends pretty wide so you can come in at an angle and have plenty of room if it is a cross wind. I have been flying Everyday for the last two and a half weeks from about 4- whenever. Manday was pretty windy and my plane died coming with the wind and only about 15ft. off of runway. I got it down but it knocked the landing gear off it was quick. Then Yesterday I flew same plane and I guess my crystal fell out or something. I was about 150ft. up and it just quit responding to anything even throttle. The wind was blowing pretty stiff but not that bad. Anyway when picking up the pieces i noticed my crystal was not in the reciever. Don't know if it fell out during flight or if the crash knocked it out. Put it back in and everything seemed fine. Well what was left. rudder and elev. worked. But man I had plenty time to get it straightened up before it hit just had no control, and it took about 15sec. for it to come down. Not a real fast down just kinda lazy spiral. Flat and all. I knew and was about laughing just before it hit as I knew I had no control. I was alone so no one could have turned anything on to hit it. There were some guys up the road with some kind of elec. equipment but they have been there almost daily. The wind blowing as it was actually slowed it down some. Wind was maybe 15mph.

As had been said, the direction and type of wind must also be considered. Wind that goes from a "tickle your face" breeze to a Force 5 in a split second is dangerous. Wind at a 45 degree angle to the runway is dangerous, maybe even more so than a 90 degree crosswind. Wind that constantly and quickly changes direction is dangerous.
"What you have to ask yourself is, do I feel lucky? Well, do you, punk?"
Don't risk your plane. As I've told many novices, don't fly if anything doesn't seem "right". I've driven 45 minutes to my field, assembled the Dr.1, looked out across the (windy) plain, took it apart, packed it back up, and drove home. Safe to fly another day!

I have flown many different types of aircraft in 30-40 M.P.H. winds. Wind straight down the runway at constant speed is not bad. Practice on your sims by turning on the wind option. I notice when flying on line and hosting that others ask for the wind to be turned off. Competance is built with practice. good luck.

I did a maiden on a 13.7 oz plane today (well actually a re-maiden as it had flown before but was new to me) in winds that where 17 gusting to 24. Its a plane I just stole..... uh, I mean acquired rather inexpensively (the seller is having sellers remorse) and the programming on the radio was, shall we say, not programmed to my desired standards (servo's plugged in the wrong slots, controls not responding to the switches properly, throws set incorrectly so I just did a reset and went from there). Lots of fun flying backwards and hovering 3 ft away at head height, with multiple rolls tossed in just for fun at waist height.
Now the disclaimer - newbies, don't try this your self until you have some good experience as this little bird was a real handful at times.........
I've learned, for the most part, that wind is relative only if your mind lets it be. While gusts can be an issue, the plane doesn't know the wind is blowing, all it knows its flying at a certain airspeed. You have to be mindful of it, respect it when down close and know the limitations of you and the plane your flying. I have a couple of larger planes that are no fun in the wind while the small one is a real blast to fly in the same or worse conditions.

I'm going to have to get down there, maybe next weekend, that is if I get all my " Honey do's done ".
