I am thinking about buying a plane from across the country. It comes completely built with all the fixings. My question is how should I have it shipped so that it will not get damaged in transit. I figure that planes are shipped all the time there has to be some secret. Any advice would be great. What type of box what type of packing, ect.?
How much would it cost me to have it shipped?

How big is it. Weight is not the issue, size is. You can get on the Fed Ex or UPS websites and play around with box dimensions to see what the various rates would be.

Bah, I forgot to add that. It is an LT 40. That is the most important dimensions. The deal would include the flight box starter control bunch of extra stuff as well. I would think it would be best to have the plane sent in one box and the ret sent in another box.

I shipped a few planes to myself when I moved from Mich to Fla. I found UPS was less $$$ than any one else. I took my planes to a local pac and ship and they made boxes to fit my 40 and 60 size planes. You will pay top $$ to ship them. UPS does not like the long boxs. I think I paid $30.00 or more for each plane. UPS is good about not crushing boxes. Just remember the $30 shipping. You may be better off to find a local who is selling the same thing unless your getting it for a low low price!

My Feedback: (11)
You will generally find that if you use a mailboxes ect or something like that to ship, you will pay more than double for shipping. Thats how they make their money.
Here is my suggestion for that plane. Have the seller get a letter size file cabinet box from an office supply store. He will also need a bunch of the foam popcorn. Put the plane and popcorn in the box and fill it all the way with the foam popcorn. No air voids. Lots of places keep that stuff, it is expensive to buy also. A lot of places throw it away.
Box the rest in a seperate box.
Take it to grey hound and put it on the bus. It will cost between $30 and $40 to ship the plane probably. UPS won't take one that big, and fedex will be about double. If the box is smaller, it will be cheaper.
Don't get too small of a box. You want it packed well. I had one where the guy left the horizontal stabs out both sides of the box. I can not believe the freight company took it that way. More surprized that it got there in one piece. Good luck.

Like flyboy said, don't let mailboxes etc. ship it. If you are set on shipping, make a box like flyboy said, and open a UPS account online. Type in the dimensions, give a credit card # and then you just print out a label and tape it to the box. It will be a lot cheaper.
