Real Flight has the best record for value added. And they just went themselves one better. Or actually, 5 better.

G4 would not originally work with any of the AddOns that were made for G3/3.5. They had produced 5 of those AddOns and had shifted to producing Expansion Packs. Expansion Packs and AddOns were basically the same thing, lots of new airplanes, choppers, and flying fields, but they chose to call them by different names. Bottom line was they offered a bunch of additions to the original base programs. But you couldn't use the addons with the new version G4, although you could use the Ex-Packs. Real Flight promised from the first that they were working on G4 to get it to accept those AddOns.

Turns out they've just started offering newly modified old AddOns. They're taking each old AddOn content and coding it to work with G4. And you can download each for FREE ! If you had bought G4 and were ticked that you couldn't use your old AddOns, well, you now can simply download them for free. And if you were planning to buy G4 it will now have available a BUNCH of free addon stuff. 5 addons whether you had bought any before or not.

So if you're interested in a sim that is actively expanded periodically by the producer, and offers a pile of FREE expansion stuff, look at Real Flight's track record. Software companies that support like they support really are out of the ordinary.

BTW, they have a website that has FREE user-created models that work on G3/3.5 and on G4.

From KnifeEdge, the explanation of the free Add-Ons:

RealFlight Add-Ons 1 & 2 have been repackaged for RealFlight G4. Even better, they are now available as free downloads! Numerous technical issues prevent the original Add-Ons disks from working with G4, but because we want G4 users to have access to this content, we're giving it away. The aircraft have been re-trimmed and the airports have been tweaked to look more like the original G1/G2 versions. Also, in cases where we updated an AO1 or AO2 aircraft (e.g. the Piper Cub) and made it a RealFlight G4 aircraft, the old version does not appear in the repackaged Add-Ons. All of the Add-Ons content is otherwise unmodified.

The repackaged Add-Ons volumes are only compatible with G4 version 4.00.051 or later. They will not work with RealFlight G3/G3.5, which already fully support the original Add-Ons disks (still available for purchase). This content is released as-is and we do not plan to make any further changes to it.

Add-Ons 3, 4, and 5 will also be re-packaged for G4 and released for free when they are ready.

Sorry, but I searched out this old post and wanted to add to it. It kind of gets my back up when people say a sim won't teach you to fly for real. I'm wondering if those who make such statements have ever used a flight sim like G4. Addmittedly, I've never flown for real, although I know when I eventually do I'll know which direction to push/pull the sticks in relation the the aircrafts orientation. I think that combined with landing has got to be the hardest part of learning how to fly RC planes.

A friend of mine who's been flying for 30+ years is a strict non-believer of flight sims, he refuses to even talk about them brushing them of as a total waste of time. I just think he's just being ignorant, if he'd actually expierenced using the sim I might value his opinion. I think Realflight G4 is a brilliant bit of kit and I highly recommend other beginners using it. I'm sure it has saved countless people of having to splash out cash on repairing/replacing planes.

Cheers Ian
