Ok guys, Im about a week out from buying my first plane. ( have to wait on my bonus 1st) and I can kinda see it coming. My gf is very supportive that I am taking up a hobby, she seems interested in the options of planes and everything that goes along with it. But how do you explain to your sig. other that one plane isnt enough? She doesnt have a shoe collection ( as some people use as an excuse) Im getting a trainer next week, and then ordering a kit to put together as well. I am sure there are other guys out there in this situation.
BTW : good idea or not to have your gf or wife come out to the field? She isnt interested in flying yet ( not that she might not) just curious how the other guys handle this.
thanks all.
As soon as I get my plane I will post, and give updates. I cant tell you how excited Ive been waiting to get it.[:

Simple... You tell her, "Flying is a Sport, Building is a Hobby"
There are days when the weather won't allow you to fly, and although you don't get much snow down there in Texas, you still have short days in the winter, so heading down to the workshop is a much better alternative than going out for a few drinks with the boys.

My Gawd, if you are that worried about it and she is just your GF, then what happens if you get married? It's your money, do what you want and can afford, that's what I say. Let her worry about her money.
If it really bothers you significantly, then you may be in the wrong hobby, because it is going to get expensive if you stay in.

I would suggest that you take her to the field so that she can see where you go and how easy the time flys by(no pun intended) to get the plane set up, get in 4 or 5 training flights and then get the plane cleaned off and packed up. She proably will be bored as most gf/wives aren't interested in flying or the noises/smells involved so most don't show up anfter the first couple of times out. This means that when you are getting in training flights, she won't have any one to talk to. The club will have whats called fun flys and she will probably enjoy going to those. Its where flyers will bring their familys out and there will be food and may be contests to participate in or just watch.[8D]

Im lucky in this area... I love flyin... My wife loves taking pictures.... works hand in hand and we both have a great time. I have more pictures of my planes flying than I can count, but its all good. We make a day of it, pack a lunch, a few cold drinks. Now that my 12 year old daughter is starting her flight trainning, makes things even sweeter.... Best of luck to ya....

My brother's wife doesn't really care what he spends on planes or how many he has. She keeps up with the budget so he just asks, "do we have 300 for a new engine" and she lets him know if he can get it that day, or if she needs a little time to move things around. But, she never says "no you already have too many." She probably thinks it but she doesn't say it.
She is a knitter and she lets him know if she spends a few hundred on that.
She has zero interest in flying but does go to the field once or twice a year to watch. She usually takes a book, or her knitting, so she doesn't really watch a lot.

I didn't take my wife out to the field until after I had soloed because I didn't want the additional distraction while I was learning. When I did take her, she had a great time but told me afterwards that she was so afraid I would crash that she didn't want to go again
It's the same reason I don't go watch her jump her horse.
As far as the number of planes, it all depends on what you find interesting about the hobby. One guy in our club has been flying the same Big Stik 40 for over 10 years. That is his only plane. One guy has several hundred planes. I am not exaggerating!! He flies a different plane every week. To each his own.
As far as the cost, just tell her what my grandmother told me. "The only difference between men and boys is the price of their toys"
Best of luck
