Default GPS Locator

An older fella at the club, who has the nickname crash, lived up to his name today and crashed his plane into trees way out in the distance.

He said "It's too hot to walk out there and try to find it now - I'll go find it later with the GPS"

What was he likely talking about? Are there devices that help you locate a lost airplane that are inexpensive?

There are several systems that are available in the $10 to $20 range, but they mostly work on an audible alarm principle. Basically they include a small speaker that emitts a loud beep or alarm when the receiver loses contact with the transmitter.

The idea is to walk out toward where the plane is and shut off the transmitter once you're in the vicinity. The alarm is powered by the flight battery, so it won't last forever. You also have to hope that the battery and/or alert device weren't disconnected or damaged during the crash.

The older fella from your club probably just meant that he'd go out and use his GPS locater to make sure he was searching different areas instead of trekking across the same ground over and over by accident.

GWS makes one that Hobby City carries. I think Tower Hobbies stocks one or two different makes of similar systems as well.

A quick google search, "GPS TRANSPODER" turned up a lot of reading, but one of the first was for a marine GPS Transponder, SPOT, with 911 help if you wanted. The price was $129 and it looked about the size of a cell phone. Interesting I'll bet it won't be long before GWS has a 2 oz unit for $39.95 for our models.

Don

Just found this first at tower then to the web site.

Not quite $39.95 though but super neat
