Default Tiger 60 Engine

Im at the point in my Tiger 60 build that I need the engine, so I can drill holes in the firewall for the mounts. However, I have no idea what engine to get??? What is a good size? Im thinking of an O.S. two stroke, just because there reliable and cheaper than 4 stroke.

Hows O.S. 91FX Ringed w/Muffler. Im thinking thats pretty good size. I mean the next size down is the .75 and its only $10 cheaper, so might as well get the extra power (and weight as I hear Tigers are tail heavy). What do you think?

Ok its a Tiger 60 and you are going to use a two stroke, so whats wrong with a sixty?

There is only one answer and that is there is nothing wrong with a sixty.

TT .61Pro, OS .61FX are two superb choices among a few others.

I would go with an OS 75 AX. On mine I've had a TT Pro 61, an OS 91 FX and an OS 75 AX. The 61 doesn't have the power to make that air frame do all it's capable of doing IMHO. The 91 is a bit much but doable with throttle management. The 75 is just right. As an added bonus I had to have extra nose weight with the 91 but balanced perfect with the 75.

My Tiger60 flew quite well on a Supertigre .61 ringed, and it balenced
perfectly. It cost me about 100 bones.[sm=shades_smile.gif]

My Tiger60 ARF has been my most often flown for about a year now. It started out with an OS61FX 2-stroke. Flew great. No complaints. Then the new engine itch started, and needed to be scratched with the brand new OS75AX. That itch had actually been scratched for about a week with one of my OS91FXs in the Tiger. I was breaking the 91 in to go into a new H9 Corsair. So...........

I've actually flown a Tiger60 with a 61, a 75, and a 91. Which would I recommend if you could only get one? Flip a coin. No kidding. Any one of them is excellent.

But truth is, I would rank them, but the ranking is almost a dead tie at the top. Both the 61 and 75 rank as 1st choice. My Tiger flies about the same with either. You can feel the difference in power, but darned if the flying is measurably better with the extra power. And that's why the 91 winds up in 2nd place. It's extra power is almost totally wasted. When I pulled it to put into the Corsair, I absolutely did not shed a tear. Yeah, it's brute power is absolutely obvious, but it's just as obvious that it adds almost nothing to what the plane can do that's worth doing.

With the 61 priced at $180, the 75 at $220, and the 91 at $230, which one would I buy for the Tiger60? The 61, no hesitation.

Any of them have negatives on the Tiger? The 91 uses a bunch more fuel for little gain and prop choices are inhibited by the ground clearance. The Tiger wasn't designed with clearance for the props a 91 can swing.

BTW, all three fit the same and the change in CG isn't significant enough that the sucker flies much different.

I like the 75, but won't be buying another until they're appreciably cheaper than the 91. The 91 is definitely a better deal for only $10 more. Only problem with the 91 is that it's wasted on a lot of 60 size planes, and the Tiger is one it's wasted on.

I have had a .76 GMS in mine and am currently running a Tower Hobbies .75 in mine and they both have preformed beautifully and flawlessly in this aircraft. Great running motors at a fraction of the price of an OS.

Cheers

I have a Saito 82 in my son's, and I REALLY wish it had a 75. Will probably change it out next year. If you are building the kit, I know that some people have built theirs heavy and some light. Mine son's is on the heavy side, over 7 lbs, but flies great.

Hey sourkraut,
My son and I finally joined a club, and today was our first day at the field. One of the guys stopped me as I was carrying the plane and said it was a really nice looking plane. He really liked that green color. Didn't get a chance to tell him that I copied one that I saw on the net!

Who makes the Towerhobbies Engines? I mean for O.S. im leaning towards the .61 or .75, but for only $110, I can get the Towerhobbies .75. Half the price of the O.S. engines is amazing, so as long as they are reliable, then why wouldnt I choose that. Assuming its is reliable though.

Mesa... glad I could steer you in the right direction for color choice. I still love flying my Tiger 60 and it is real easy to see with the Apple Green/ White Stars on top and White with Green Stars on the bottom. The .75 TH pulls this plane around really nice, and with a 13x6 Master Airscrew prop, she sounds like an air raid siren when she unloads in the air. Mine is a little on the heavy side also at 7.75 lbs but she ground handles, flys and lands like a dream

Cheers

Tower Hobbies and GMS are made in the same factory in China, the TH .75 is ABC and the GMS .76 is ringed. I have both and the TH pulls just a little bit better than the GMS but not by much( about 500rpm more with a 13x6 MAS prop.) As far as reliable, I have never so much as had a single dead stick with either in over 2 years flying these motors. There are lots of comments in the engine section, some good, some bad. All I can do is give you my opinion and I think for the dollar you can't go wrong. I also have quite a few OS, Supertigre, Evolution, Rossi, Irvine, Thunder Tiger, Webra and Magnum 2 strokes and I can't see where one is that much better than the other. It's the old Ford vs Chev vs Dodge thing. I will keep using and buying TH and GMS because for the money they are good in my eyes and pocketbook.

Hey Shorty, I am putting a ST 75 in mine. I've heard the weight helps balance the plane and that it will pull the plane quite well. Hopefully I'll have it in the air soon, I just have to cover and glue the vert and horiz stabs in and hook up the pushrods. What colors are you going with? My 2yr old son loves sponge bob, so I did the wings yellow and the fuse black, I still have some stripping to do and find a little sponge bob to sit in the cockpit. I'll post some pics when its finished.

The Super Tigre, GMS, and Tower Hobbies engine lines are all manufactured by GMS in China. The Tower Hobibes .75 is an ABC design while the GMS .76 and the Super Tigre .75 are ringed designs. Any of the three should be an excellent choice for the Tiger .60.

You might also add the SK .70, SK .80, and JBA .75 2-strokes to your shopping list. All three models are available from Kangke USA at http://www.kangkeusa.com or from http://www.bj-model-engines.com/home.html These engines have a great reputation for power, reliability, and value. I own a JBA .56 2-stroke and it's a very impressive engine. With stock exhaust systems, it tachs almost identically with the O.S. Max .55 AX. The O.S. Max is better with a performance exhaust system.

My experience with the JBA .56 has been nothing but positive and I'd jump at the chance to try the JBA .75 2-stroke.

I think Ill choose the Towerhobbies .75 then. Its cheap, and I would prefer to buy from Towerhobbies over the other places that have the JBA ones and all, just because I have used Towerhobbies any time and no issues at all.

Thats also one factor thats making me get the Tower. Ill just buy it with my radio, so Ill get $30 off. I could seperate the two into two orders, and get the $30 and the $10, but shipping is $9.99 so its easier to just get one order and spend the extra $.01

I have the Tiger60 deluxe w/retracts kit waiting to be built.
I think it will get a Supertigre .75 instead of the .61 ringed
that I had on the arf.[sm=shades_smile.gif]
