Used Transmitter question
I got a Transmitter/receiver from the classifieds here at RCUniverse. It is a Futuba T6XH with a FP-R1380P receiver (PCM1024 it also says). I was wondering if I should just replace both battery packs, since I don't know how they have been maintained, or go ahead and use them. The Receiver battery says "JR Extra 1100 mAh". The Transmitter is a Futaba NT-8JY (looks like a lot of AA batteries wrapped in plastic). The Transmitter has a 72.050 plugged in it. Any advice is appreciated. This is my first one...

I'm sorry but don't know anything about the TX or Rx you just got except that one is a Futaba and other is a JR. They are not compatable. Therfore will not work with one another. Why would you buy something you know nothing about? As far as the batteries go they may be ok, the only way you can find out is by charging them and trying them. Suggestion: only buy things you know about.

The best way to find out if the batteries are good is to put them on a cycler/charger that will tell you the mAh capacity. Since it sounds like you are new to the hobby, you probably don't have one of these or a real need for one yet. Therefore, I say replace the batteries. It is cheap insurance and beats losing a plane.
How good is the deal on the radio? I don't want to spoil a sale for anyone but there are great prices on some brand new, good entry level 72MHz radios out there. They'll have instructions, new batteries, a wall charger and everything you need to get going.

The guy has a spesfic question, should he trust the old battteries or buy new ones. My recomendation would be, buy a new set and put your mind at ease. I suggest buying from Tower or Horizon, not for price, but because they will have the best turnover and the batteries you get will not be shelf queens.

RE: Used Transmitter question
Thanks for all the quick responses! I purchased the Tx and Rec about a year ago at the same time I got my LT-40 kit (award money from work, so I had only so much to work with). It appeared to be a good deal at that time, it included 4 servos as well. I'll look into getting a new Receiver battery. The Tx battery looks wired in, unless the plug is inside the housing. What do I look for in a Rec battery for this kind of setup?
Thanks!
Thanks!

Ask at your club if anyone has a battery cycler. Charge them up fully WAIT ONE WEEK [THIS IS IMPORTANT] then run the battery down on the cycler. This will give you the capacity.
I have had some 7 year old packs still giving full capacity and some 1 year old packs that were down to 20%.
