Prop? Venus 40/ OS46ax
What prop are you guys using in a venus 40 running an OS 46AX? What have you guys found to be the best? Looking for Thrust, not looking for it to be too fast...just fast enough. I was thinking a 12x5 to start.

RE: Prop? Venus 40/ OS46ax
My Venus flew best with an APC 11X6 on a Magnum 46 XLS. Not as much speed as a 11X7, but easier to keep a more constant speed through maneuvers. Also, all the vertical you can use. I can recommend it.

Try a few different props,I would say start with 11x6 and if it is to fast go to 11x4, I'm using a 12x4 on my 46ax seems just right for me.Remember to retune your engine when you switch prop sizes.

Keep in mind what the Venus 40 is for. It is an entry level pattern plane.. sort of a pattern trainer. So, what you want is power and not speed. I would go with a larger diameter prop with a low pitch. That way you will keep the RPM's down but have remain in the power curve for the vertical maneuvers, large seemless loops, and so on. A 12-4 or even a 13-4 prop may do you just fine. The good thing is that these props are not expensive.... say four or five bucks each, at the most.
You want smooth accelleration, ability to go the line with minimum throttle (meaning about half) and then pull to vertical THEN add throttle as needed. Low pitch with the combination of the AX engine will allow you to do that. The Venus 40 is a fine flying aircraft.
The lower pitch is like shifting to a lower gear in your car. You get more power but the aircraft will be a tad slower, which is a good thing for pattern.

Actually Joe,
that is a popular 3D prop for a .46 engine. I would go 12x5 or 11x6 or 11x7

There is a slightly difference among the 12 x 5 and 11 x 6, If you are planning to use your Venus for pattern maneuvers go with the 12 x 5, if not, and you want a plane with more speed and high roll rate then go with the 11 x 6.
Both work almost the same and the difference is almost no appreciable but in the speed.

11-7 on a 55 AX? A tad under-prop'ed I would think. I have a 13-6 on my Goldberg Skylark 70 and OS 55 AX and it flys like a dream.
Remember that noise does not equate to performance. The thing should peak RPM at about 10K or so. Anything over is that is wasted and subjects that engine to unnecessary wear and tear.
