Default Spinner came off when starting oops, why?

LOL! I just tried starting my OS 46 AX and when i removed the starter the spinner and prop came off with it? LOL. What have i done wrong?

I have the back plate of the spinner resting up against the big metal casing on the output shaft, the 1 with the flat spot to fit on the shaft. Then on that i have the prop than big black washer than the prop nut and spinner nose cone, what am i doing wrong???

You must tighten the prop nut really tight. If the prop is plastic, tighten the nut with a 4 to 6 inch wrench as tight as you can. If the prop is wood, slightly less torque, because you can crush the wood prop.

The normal direction of the starter is trying to remove the prop, so it must be really tight to resist this.

I just tightened the prop nut with 2 guys, 1 holding the prop and the other tightening, almost cut our fingers off tightening the damn thing and it still came loose?

What kind of spinner is it. Plastic, aluminum? What prop?

You may have too much fuel in your engine?
This is causing high resistance to turning the engine over. Possibly firing before top dead center and contributing to the prop coming loose

It is the plastic spinner that comes with the Boomerang, cheap and nasty looking. The prop is a master airscrew 11 X 6. I tightened the hell out of it again and it has moved and started to dig in to the spinner a bit but it has stayed there now for 2 full tanks of fuel and 4-5 starts.

It'll be the plastic spinner, most of them don't have enough friction between the spinner backplate and either the prop driver or prop itself to handle the starting torque so they just slip and come loose. Ditch the spinner for now and try without it and if you don't have any more problem then get a better spinner.

when you use the starter and there is too much fuel in the engine, it will spin off the spinner and nut. Trust me....been there. Anyway it makes a very distinctive sound. Sort of like a high pitched buzz..... Take off the spinner and retighten. And relax, it happens alot.

You are probaly flooding the engine during fueling. The engine is now flooded causing it to backfire, when this happens the prop nut will loosen. Tighten the prop with a extension wrench so you can get it tight.

Cheers guys, i think you got the problem spot on, it was over fuelled when i was having the problem. Learning from my mistakes though so not all is lost, what sort of spinner do you recommend for a newb pilot on a Boomerang 40?

Spinner nuts are far superior to the cheezy plastic spinners included with most ARF's. They look far better on a trainer. will present far less problems such as you just experianced and they will allow a prop changeout in seconds unlike the time consuming process to change out a prop with a full spinner.

If the spinner is holding now, don't worry about changing it. There's very little point in spending extra $ on the spinner for a trainer. After you crash, and the spinner is in fragments, consider a prop nut for the next installation.

Stix , you know who this is , so stop the negative thinking , and i quote you "i am sure i will need all 3 after my first flight" unquote.
Now as for a replacement spinner you can get here in Australia which is good , is to buy a TY1 spinner of the size you require. It has an aluminum backplate which wont slip when you tighten things up. Another email will be forth coming later tonight.
