My .45 was the best running engine I've ever had... at wide open throttle. It never ran right at lower RPM's though no matter what I did with it. I think it was just the nature of the carb like you say.
Ditto

I've two of them that have worked very well from day one, albeit with a bit more tuning than I would have liked.

Then I have another two where I had to cut a half moon semi-circle on the throttle barrel to adjust the mixture properly enough to assure good idles and transitions. After doing this the engines run perfectly...

The strange thing is I learned about doing this on a review for a Thunder Tiger .45 engine where the reviewer was talking about problems that were identical to what I saw.

I tried his fix, and I'm glad I did... as it made my touchy SuperTigres very reliable.

The big muffler repulses a lot of people but I never had any trouble with them
Yep, that big muffler sure is an ugly POS, but it works well, and really if you're running a plane where the look of the muffler's that important there's plenty of attractive aftermarket choices. The only drama I've ever had with one was in an ME109 arf (.45 sized) that I ran my ST G61 in - there was NO way I was fitting an aftermarket muffler inside that skinny cowl and since I had the motor inverted but really wanted to hide the muffler under the fuse I machined (read: hacked with a dremel) a 90 degree adapter for it out of some 1" square aluminium stock. Worked well till I landed the plane on its' cockpit at full noise - there wasn't much left after that other than the engine with its' ugly muffler.
