I live in Bloomington, IL. Probably too far away from you but my suggestion is to search the AMA's website for clubs in your area.
Most clubs will have instructors who are willing to help newcomers..

Just go west on Dundee Rd. into Wheeling. After passing 83 and just prior to Bufffalo Gv. Rd., the prime area Hobby Shop -- Venture Hobby -- will be in a strip on the north side of Dundee.
You can get all filled in there about area Clubs, such as Blue Max, Skylarks, and Sky Knights.
Out at Woodfield Mall, in Busse Woods you will find a large Forest Preserve site which I think is still managed by Chicagoland RC. Go out and get acquainted.

I'm further south than Wayne, but I know the Lake County Forest Preserve has a site on Dundee Road off of 53. That's the Blue Max site. www.bluemaxrc.com. You will find your instructor there. The folks in Lake Forest, (RC_SPORT correct me please if I'm wrong) have a limit on members but I'm not sure about instructor availability there.
