Default second coat of canopy paint: when? how?

I am using Tamiya lexan paint to paint a plexiglass canopy. Everything went as planned, except I sprayed too much on the first coat. This made for a couple of places where it ran. Classic newbie mistake. Anyways, I would like to know:
1. When I would be able to resand the first coat to get rid of the overruns.
2. What's the best way to sand the first coat in order to spray a second coat.
Thanks

Are you trying to tint or paint?? I use an air brush to tint and it's just misting to get that colored matt look. If your painting for a solid color the runs may not show. Sanding the canopy will probably result in scratches that may or may not show depending on what you are trying to do.

I have found that when painting a canopy a solid color, just paint the inside of the canopy. The color shows through the clear canopy, and you get a lovely finish. Any runs or drips are inside and never seen.

One way to color that is to use RIT clothing die. It comes out pretty neat provided the material (Plastic??) will take the tinting. There is a thread somewhere on RCU that discusses this method. It tints it and looks very realistic. Just a suggestion, more likely to late for the OP's application, but perhaps worthwhile mentioning.

I found the link, and here it is.
