Default best engine for Sig Four Star 120??

I love the Four Stars, what would be the best engine (examples of 2 stroke, 4 stroke, gas).....2 stroke of this size would use a lot of fuel though....

I just finished a 4 Star 120. I put a Saito 150 in it. I have not flown it yet because of the weather, sometime in the Spring. It should haul-.

I love the Four Stars and I have a Saito 150 and a 125. The 150 would come closer to balancing the plane

The planes are versatile and will fly great with a 90 two stroke or a 33cc gas engine

I have a 4* 120 with a converted Ryobi 31cc weedwhacker engine, with an APC 16x6 prop. It flies beautifully, and gets around a 12-15 min flight out of only a 12 oz tank.

Did you have to cut the nose back some to allow for the length/wight of the Ryobi?

On mine I bought the Carr Precision hub and mount. The shrouds unbolt off the old crankcase. I lightened and balanced the flywheel using a Dubro balancer and a die grinder. I use an 18-8 prop at 7000

How much is the total cost, including buy the engine? Are those engines safe?

The new Ryobi's have a cast on shroud that must be cut away. The Hub and mount were less than $40. You have to buy a resistor spark plug also. the props are up around $15.

I bought the engine new in 1985 and used it as a weed whacker for many years.

I did several of these back about 8 yrs ago. I did two McColloch 32's, two Homelite 30's, a Weed Eater 21, and a Homelite 25.

People gave me the weed whackers except for the Weed Eater and it was sticking up out of a trash can along the side of the road.

so that might be cheaper than buying big two stroke (I'm not a big fan of huge two strokes....fuel economy...)

It sounds really interesting, but I dont think I'm skilled enough to do it...

I guess it takes a certain kind of person to do it. Over the years there has been a world of weed whackers and chain saws converted.

Here's what was originally a John Deere 30 (homelite 30) that I converted with Carr Precision hub. It turns a 18-8 at 7500.
I made the rear back plate/ mount myself
The flywheel in unknown from an old chainsaw. I cut it down and balanced it.

I have a Goldberg Tiger 120. It is just about as heavy as anything you could get (as an ARF out of the box). My engine of choice is the OS 1.20 AX. I've been flying this aircraft with this engnie ever since I bought it and it flys just great. Has plenty of power, lots of vertical, and starts up immediately, even when cold and setting for weeks. You cannot go wrong with this engine. I have three of them, and love them.

I have a friend who has probably a couple hundred flights on a OS 120 AX. It has always been trouble free on a U-Can-Do 60 with a 17-4 prop

I like OS engines but the 120 must be using a lot of fuel...right?

I don't know. I don't pay attention to that. I fly to enjoy myself. It's supposed to use fuel.

I fuel it up, fly for about 10 minutes, land it then sit around for about 15 or 20 minutes talking to my fellow RC'ers, then fuel it up and fly. I never noticed how much fuel it uses, nor do I care.

The new MLD-28CC sure fits nice. And it is as light as a ST 2300 glow.

The G26 is a lot of engine but the plane can handle it

If you want to try an easy conversion try finding a weedeater 21cc with the long shaft and run it on GAS/GLOW, all that is involved is stripping the engine out of the weedeater, cut away the extra metal with a hacksaw, do a little grinding and if you do find the long shaft all you have to do it extend the threads on the end of the crankshaft with a die, for a prop hub all you need is a pc of 1" or 1-1/4" aluminum rod with a 5/16" hole drilled in the middle ( use a lathe ). To run gas/glow you just remove the flywheel, coil and sparkplug and use one of these http://www.horizonhobby.com/Products...rodID=ZEN23445 with an OS F fourstroke glowplug, richen the needles a bit and for fuel you mix 1 part 10%nitro/10%oil glow fuel with 2 parts premium gasoline ( check the ENGINE CONVERSION forum for more info ). Here's some pics of my 21cc that runs on gas/glow, it will turn an APC 17x6 @ 7200 rpm.

What i like about gas/glow is no more messy planes after a flight, no chance of RX interferance as there is no ignition ( operates just like a normal glow engine), no extra onboard battery and run time is only a little less than gas/oil mix, on most engines you get more power than gas/oil, easy to start, very low idle and light weight ( my 21cc with steel muffler was 32 oz ).

Why naturally you could use a Four Star 60. It would by a perfect match.

I have seen a 4*1.20 fly really well with a SPE 26. The guy could stay up about a half hour on 24oz tank.[X(] Really nice set up. sounded good aswell

Tailskid, I should be flying my 120 in the next week or so. It has an Evolution 26 on it. I'll keep you posted on how it handles. John
