Well the more involved in this hobby you become the more you find ....you will need , then more time goes by and you start on the would be nice items , scroll saw , vacum forming machine , etc ...... next thing you know your putting an addition on the house to build that much needed shop , buying a new truck to transport your planes to the field ( trailer optional ) lol it never ends ! my first plane was a ARF after building it on the kitchen table for 4 months multiple fights with the girlfriend I moved to another room in the house and have progressed to what you see pic below , however I am still not pleased I have the space and i am a carpenter by trade maybe that addition / shop is looking like a pretty good idea to me

Most of you gents got it easy!

I don't think that rc space is ever going to be an issue with my girlfriend. As a matter of fact, after Oshkosh '08 I found out it will swing the other way around. Oh, she found her airplane that she wants to build. Now it's finding the 5,000 sq/ft to build and store it. I feel like a bit of my manhood will be stripped away (LOL!) - she'll be using the likes of DeWalt, rivets, welding torches, and steel while I'll be in the corner with my 150 grit and a 2 oz bottle of CA!

If the REAL costs of any hobby were properly accounted for...nobody could afford them. Let's see.... how much did fishing in that little skiff used to cost me?

Boat..used and cheap at $10,000.00
Trailer $1,200.00 or so $$$
Trailer tires every three years $$$$
Hitch for towing $$$$$
Much bigger vehicle than I otherwise would need..so I could tow the boat $$$$$$$
More gasoline costs .....for the bigger vehicle ....so I could tow the boat...even when I wasn't towing the boat..$$$$$
Storage monthly $75.00
Insurance $250 annually;
Driving to the fishing site...$30.00 or so a trip;
Wear and tear on the bigger vehicle $$$$$
Two trips a week; 70 miles one way an extra 280 miles every week ..that is an extra 15,000 miles annually on the vehicle...Whoops, Now I have to replace it every three years. instead of five or six years $$$$$
Lures $15.00 $$$ every other day oh..maybe just every week . ( I have dozens that were used once or twice )
Rods ( twenty at last count ) $$$$$
Reels (can't count them all ) $$$$$$
Line; weights; hooks; floats; etc. etc. etc. etc
AND... extra trips $$$ to far away places to catch fewer fish than I caught near home..$$$$$;

Ha ha ha Rich
You left out some other hobbies Rich. Like photgraphy, racing rc cars, mountain biking and the list goes on and on. lol

Most of the stuff needed will last forever! I got most of my field equipment like 10 years ago and still working fine.

I've been in the hobby 60 years this year, and it's never been a cheap hobby.

I've only been flying a year now. Took up building a few months ago to spell the winter months. Since I don't have a garage, I took over the boys old bedroom and have converted it into my hangar and building room. Stuff everywhere! Like you wzac, my wife used to call my plane that dam plane, now she says that dam room! I told her recently I needed more room and was considering taking over the living room since we really don't use it............she told me to go to my room!
Yes, First your building on the kitchen table untill she kicks you out because she is tired of the Balsa Dust Boogers and the CA stings her eyes. Then you move into a room in the house but are told to do all your cutting and sanding outside. On top of that you are threatened that if you slop epoxy on the carpet you will have to replace all the carpet in the house. OUCH[:@] That would hurt the hobby budjet. So then you build a workshop in the back yard, dub it "The Man Cave" and attempt to lay down rules such as "No women alloud inside" or "Your athority ends within 10 ft of this sactuary" Attached is a picture with the Cave in the background. I have put $24,000 this 1500 sq ft two story oasis of testosterone and I still have to run electricity, HVAC, insulation and finish the interior walls... It is totally worth it
What's that white stuff covering everything?
