Default Hitec HFS-05MS in .40 size Glow?

Guys

Here's one of those questions that's only dumb if you don't ask

Can I use the [link=http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXGZT0&P=0]HFS-05MS[/link] receiver in a .40 size glow plane? It doesn't say this receiver is for park flyers (although that's what I had it in). One of our club members is looking for some receivers and I thought I'd give him this, but hesitate because he wants it for a .40 Trainer.

What do you guys think?

Thanks!

Thanks Ken! I checked it out on Tower's site and couldn't find the answer ... should have checked Hitec. [sm=red_smile.gif]

Being a single conversion, it will not be as resistant to other interfernce that might develop (noise, static etc).

Range is more dependent on the Transmitter than the reciever with an omnidirectional antenna.

It will probably be OK in a trainer, but keep a very close eye on it for the first few flights for any signs of hits.

Follow-on question ... what's "single conversion" mean? I always purchase "dual conversion" receivers for my non-park flyer stuff, but never really stopped to think about what that meant; other than it must be twice as good as single

Thanks!

Let say your receiver is set to receive 72.555 mz in order to do this the 72.555 need to be changed to your I.F. (intermediate frequency) let say that your IF is set to 10.7mz this is called your band pass freq. because it will not allow any freq. above or below 10.7mz. To pass. So to receive 72.555 your mixing freq. needs to be 61.855mz (72.555 - 61.855 = 10.7mz) if you change your mixing freq. up by 1 mz to 62.855 you will now be receiving 73.555. The mixing freq. can be changed by changing a crystal or by using a programmable VFO (variable frequency oscillator) like tuning in a FM radio station. ( programmable VFO is a synthesized receiver) in a duel receiver this happened twice with two IF’s

From the Hitec Website General Reciever FAQ:

Q. What is the difference between "Dual Conversion" and "Single Conversion"?
A. A single conversion receivers have only one "mixer" stage. The receiver takes the incoming signal and mixes it with the local oscillator signal. The different frequency is then amplified as the Intermediate Frequency (IF) and detected for use. The draw back with single conversion is that there is a chance of "image" reception. This is where, depending on the receiver tuning, the receiver will pick up an image of another frequency at either the high or low end of the band.
A dual conversion receiver has two mixer stages and two local oscilators. This eliminates the chances of image reception. Dual conversion also allows for better interference rejection

I would not recommend this based on my experience with two Hitec 5ch SC Rx's giving me bad glitches in a Nexstar. I would recommend moving up to a Supreme IIS which is their low cost DC Rx. The difference was night and day between the two 05S and the one Supreme IIS.
Just a warning.

Yeah, I decided to tell the member that this was not a good idea. I'll toss this into my next park flyer or something - definitely not going into a glow plane. Thanks for the warning Beau.

I'm a big fan of the Hitec Supreme IIS receiver, as well. It's a very high quality full range dual conversion receiver. The $39.99 price is simply icing on the cake.

Completely agree! That's my 72MHz receiver of choice - very nice. I had one of these little receivers sitting idle when a member asked if anyone had any "extra" receivers sitting around. I said I did, but wanted to check and make sure it was safe for a .40 sized glow plane.

Thanks guys!

I have used my hfs-05ms in a huge variety of planes! From shockflyers to 60 size glow powered. I found that the 05ms works very good in my 2meter glider, never had a glitch!
