Default Prop Question

Hey, I being new to nitro planes everything is just so foreign to me! I ordered an OS 65LA engine with a 12 x 6 prop. It finally came the other day and I was trying to put it all together but the hole on the prop is a lot smaller than the shaft coming out of the motor! What the heck? (tower hobbies recommended the prop with the motor) I ordered a spinner too and the spinner adapter kit as well. The instructions were no help at all either!

It is quite normal for the props not to have the proper hole size. You can use a prop reamer or the proper size drill bit to get it to the correct size. As for your spinner, some of them come with bushings to make it the correct size, or you may have to drill it as well. You will find the reason for this is that your 12 X 6 prop is designed to be used on a number of different engines made by a number of different makers. It appears that no 2 engine makers have the same size prop shaft so the prop and spinner makers start with all the holes being small. Good Luck, Dave

Yes, there are spacers you can buy. As for the prop, do NOT use a drill bit (unless you have a drill press, and it's still not recommended). You will never get the hole straight, and will not balance or spin true. Buy a prop reamer.

A drill bit will do the same thing that this reamer will they are self centering so save your money and just use a drill bit. And you do not need a drill press just hold the prop safely and drill out.

It works better without a press because the bit will follow the orignal hole thru.

yeh, just use a hand drill. A drill press is not needed unless you are working for NASA.

here's where the caution flags go up, not to sound harsh being a knarley surfer myself, but if your new to nitro planes a superskybolt is a fairly acrobatic plane far from a beginner type.
please tell me you have been flying electric acrobatic planes or simmilar types, its far from a beginner airframe, also the LA series of engines is on the low end of the power spectrum of OS engines there not bad but a 55AX or 61fx would blow it out of the water.

BTW forget the spacer save that money and get a pits style muffler so your pipe isn't hanging out of the cowl.
like this http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LX8681&P=0
or this http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXUNU0&P=0

you just need to verify the mounting hole messurements I would call tower to confirm the ## before ordering the muffler, the 65LA looks like the one for the 61fx

Yes yes this is my first NITRO plane, not my first first plane. I have someone at the club who has been flying for over 20 years there to fly it first too

LOL no this is what I had in mind when I went out there to Jalama, but I did fly today,it was a little windy at our field out by the coast not too bad, this is what I was flying today,my Gizmo sport plane.
I was going to fly one of my warbirds but it got a little to breezy and sprinkled a bit so I packed it in for the day.

its Ocean Beach in San Francisco,
the P-40 is a Hangar-9 60 size, 63" wingspan ARF with a OS91 4stroke its really a sport plane that looks like a warbird, the Hangar-9 planes fly great, there loads of fun and have the warbird looks, there also very forgiving in the air.
