Hi all! Im posting this on my Dads behalf (this is his plane).
Before I get into the meat & potatoes of this a little background. My Dad used to build kit planes when he was teens early 20's. I think most were like .049's free flight.
Myself, Im into boats. Electric. I run mainly brushless. I have no plane experience.
Both of us are on shoe string budgets.
Today he picked up a plane @ the Weak Signals Toledo Show. Its a Kangke:
http://kangkeusa.com/Super_Kraft/astro_trainer_ea.htm
So we have a bare plane thats covered. We need a proper motor, esc, prop and battery size recommendation. Also help with a radio. I was thinking 2.4 Ghz but this planes on the small side.
I was thinking of ordering from www.hobbyking.com again (I need batteries) so its a good time to order his plane parts also.
Im looking at their prop/motor/esc combos. Im hoping someone could spec one out for us.
Thanks,
Ryan
** Posted on rcgroups also. Want to see if theres different advice here- or more for that matter.

Check out Hobby City http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/store/uh_index.asp
They have excellent prices, and offer some motor, esc, prop combos for about $15. Add a 3s lipo and you will be in good shape.
I have purchased from them and they provide decent products at reasonable (actually cheap prices) prices with a delivery time of about 14 - 21 days (it is coming out of Hong Kong). I suggest staying with known names such as Turnigy or TowerPro. Both products perform well and the TowerPro is typically less money for the same product. I have also had excellent service with the "Zippy" lipos
If you want to put together your own setup, look at motors that will put out 150 - 200 watts of power. You have a throttle, so you do not have to fly full throttle.
Just starting out, the 2.4 mhz radio is the way to go. The radio is ALMOST bulletproof as far as interference is concerned.
Since you are into electric boats, I will let you recommend the type of connectors (Deans, Sermos, etc.) and a charger.
I do strongly recommend having your dad get with a club. They will provide instructors at no charge. Until a person gets the co-ordination down and the "visual" aspect down planes can easily get ahead of you. A simulator will HELP your dad. THEY CAN NOT TEACH YOU HOW TO FLY, but they can be a big help.
FMS is a free download (and it is a decent sim, especially for the money {:_) ) and the interface cable can either be purchased on EBay (about $10 - $20) or you can make one if you are somewhat handy with a soldering iron.
You also need to be aware that since the plane is very light in weight, it is not going to handle very much wind - flying is probably going to be best in the early AM or early evening.
Hope this is of some help.

Thanks for the responses so far.
Going from info raz on rcg gave me Ive picked the mid end motor:
http://unitedhobbies.com/UNITEDHOBBI...4.7_Prop_Combo
Heres the radio (Dads a right hander):
http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=8338&Product_Name=Hobby_ King_2.4Ghz_4Ch_Tx_&_Rx_(Mode_2)
And we will need 3 of these I assume?:
http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/s...g/2.7kg/.12sec
For batteries I have no clue. 2s, 3s? Im guessing a 15c will be fine?
I really have no clue about planes or anything. I guess a club would be a good thing. Ia gree, unlike a boat or a car theres more to planes.

For that motor, I would get a 3cell lipo and a
35 amp esc. 3 cell lipo = 11.1 volts, you will
need a good balancing charger also. Read up
on Lipo do's and don'ts also.

Hi</p>
I have bought that motor combo and have it on a 400 chipmunk (goldberg) I have a variety of 3 cell lipos (zippy ABF) from 15c to 30c and have had no problems with any of them. I have bought all these batteries from Hobby City and they performed flawlessly and they are now over two years old. I would recommend the Hextronik balance charger 2-4 cell (about 30usd) it is an adjustable and easy to use charger that plugs into a cigarette lighter. The rule of thumb I use is this 500-1100 ma I charge at 1 amp. 1200-1500ma I use 1.5 amps. 1500 & up 2 amps. I use a 2200ma pack in the chipmunk (for nose weight) and an 8x4 APC style prop (hobby city) I can fly it until I get sick of flying it on that battery (Well over 10 minutes My transmitter timer is set at that) then I land and still can fly it again. I have also used a 1000ma battery and added lead and got a full ten minutes with out charging. That setup nothing gets nothing more than warm. (That makes things last longer as heat is a killer of batteries and speed controls.)</p>
I am not sure of the weight of that airplane you are setting up but if it is high wing under 2lbs you should be fine. My chipmunk is about 24 oz ready to fly with battery and it is a missile with that setup. Make sure there is good airflow through the motor compartment over the speed controller and battery. This will really help keep it cool and make things last longer.</p>
The 9x4.7 prop is a bit much and the motor gets real hot. (At least mine did.) The 8x4 works much better.</p>
I hope this helps.</p>
