Default Futaba Batteries

Hello all:
I have finally managed to talk my brother-in-law out of his trainer.
The trainer is about 10 years old, and never been flown.
I am really worried about the batteries. They do not seem to hold a charge.
The receiver battery is Futaba P.Pack NR-4J and the transmitter has a P.PACK NT-8iB.
The closes thing on Tower that I have found is for the receiver is NR4M and for the transmitter is an NT-8iB.
But neither one is a P.PACK.
As you might guess, my question is will these batteries be ok?
What should I be paying close attention to?
I am trying to do things right, I am going to join the AMA, the local flight club and get an instructor.
I am just trying to get everything ready for the pretty days.

Thank you in advance.

I wouldn't chance it, and would buy new batteries. NiMh and NiCd batteries are really not that expensive considering losing the whole plane.

If batteries are always maintained they will last for several years, I have them last for about 3 or 4 but I get a bit nervious after that and change them out even if they still cycle OK. 10 years is a very very long time, change them!!

New batteries are a must. If thats the only issue you have, consider yourself lucky.

If you want the Futaba packs, either one of theses depending on if you want the flat or square pack.

And for the transmitter.

These packs will work the best with your wall charger with 50ma charge on both ports. Charge them overnight, at least 14 to 16 hours, and work the transmitter and servo's till the servo's slow down, then leave the transmitter on till you run it down. It will beep, or the LED will change colors. Then charger them again overnight and you should be good to go.

Read the manual and it should tell you how to tell when the transmitter is running low.

If the batteries are 10 years old, replace them. End of discussion.
You could go here http://www.hangtimes.com/nobsbatteries.html . The batteries don't have to say Futaba on them.

You don't need to replace them with "Futaba" batteries. Any NiCd or NiMH packs will do just fine. You can get them pretty much anywhere that sells quality packs. I've bought them from Tower Hobbies as well as radicalrc.com . But, as recommended already, you should replace them if you are uncomfortable with them. Personally, I would not trust them.

Thank you all:
Replacing the batteries not an option. It has to be done.

My biggest question was what to replace them with.
Does anybody know how to break down the code?
NR=?
4 = 4 cells would make sense, but I am most likely wrong.
J or QB = ?

Now it is time to place my order with Tower.

Any 4 or 5 cell pack will work for the receiver. The only thing about the transmitter is thw layout (Flat or square) and the plug. If it says it's for a Futaba, the plug should work.

It's a square pack, and mighty spendy. I'd go to www.hangtimes.com and get a high capacity for less money.
