Default Falcon 56 Mark II, engine choice

I am building the Falcon 56 Mark II that I have had for 10 years. It's my first build. I will be using a revolution 46 AX. Will this be too much engine for the plane?

It's going to be a speed demon.

I'm not familiar with this engine. You have combined names of three different engines (revolution 46 AX)

Evolution 46
OS 46 AX

A 46 sized engine is plenty for this plane without going overboard. You'll do fine with it. Just remember that you can always throttle back if you need to.

Back when I was in my early twenties some 40 years ago we used OS Max 30S engines on these planes and they were unlikely to have as much power as a current OS LA 25

In 1969 the Falcon 56 was probably the most popular model plane in central Ohio

Generally speaking, the 46 size engines are plenty for that size aircraft. Now, some have more power than others. For instance, the OS LA series have less than their AX series (much less) but are completely adequate for that plane. I had a rather heavy kit while I was working in England, that consisted of EPP like foam, and was assembled with packing tape and duct tape. As I said, it was pretty heavy. I had an Evolution 46 engine on that plane. It was pretty amazing. Had lots of power plus it was fairly easy to fly as a trainer. But because it was fairly heavy, it was somewhat of a handful at landing, but we managed.

The point here is that even as heavy as that plane was, it flew fine with that engine.

I also built a Debonnaire S.P.A.D. a while back and it had an OS 46 FX I believe, (the series I mean, it was an OS 46 but not an AX). It too was heavy, but that engine handled it just fine.

The Hobbico NexSTAR RTF comes wth an OS 46 FXi and that was plenty of power for that larger trainer aircraft (larger than a Hobbico Super Star, for instance, which came with an OS 46 LA).

THANKS CGr,
I think I'll go with the Ev 46. I was worried about weight & too much power for a trainer. Hopefully I won't be in training mode forever.

Your right, my mistake. I meant the EVO 46 NX.
Sorry for the confusion.

I have an "OLD" FP.35 in my Falcon MKII and that is enough power to fly around with mild aerobatics, loops rolls and general moves. It is no where near a pwoer house. Now a .46 would yank this plane around just fine.

My problem now is that I can only fit a 6 OZ. tank in the Falcon. I'm wondering how long my flight time will be with the EVO 46 in it?

The engine will only run a little over 6 min at full throttle on the ground.

I ran a 6 oz tank on a plane with a Enya 40. It would run 7 min on the ground full throttle. But in the air at partial throttle I always flew 10 min.

That doesn't sound like a lot of time, but I'm sure I won't be at full throttle all that much. I'm still looking for an 8 oz. tank that will fit. It's a set screw on the front steering gear that is stopping the tank from going all the way down. I'v read where you can heat gun the tank into a new shape. I might try that.
Thanks again

Can you flip the steering arm over so that it doesn't ride against the tank? I've had several of the Falcons and all with 8 oz tanks. I used K&B 40's on all of mine.

Welcome to the Falcon 56 club, boxsterguy!!!

Here you can find videos of a Falcon with a 0.46 engine:

http://www.masportaviator.com/ah.asp?CatID=1&ID=191

I have one, built from an old kit, with ailerons, powered by a 0.40 Magnum and fed by a 6 ounces tank.

It flies for more than 10 minutes if not kept at full power all the time.

I believe this model was meant for 0.35 engines.
I like the performance of the 0.40, although it fits tight and the tail needed some weight to counter-balance it.

Please post any solution to make a 8 ounces tank fit in the compartment, still keeping some room for foam padding.

It is an awesome model; enjoy it!

Best of lucks!!

Thanks for the imput. The 8 oz. Sullivan tank may work now if I reshape it with my heat gun which is arriving today. The only problem is that its width is exactly that of the fusilage so there is no room on the sides for foam. Is this going to be a problem with vibration/foaming of fuel?

Remember, it is not the engine who pulls the airplane. It is the prop! Use a low pitch prop such as 12x4 or 12x5 and you will be OK.
