<!Session data>Hey guys i was using a 1600 mah rechargeable glow starter. It started the engine which was brand new the very first flip. The engine ran and then quit before i was able go to full throttle. I checked the glow plug removed with the glow starter once near the beginning of trying to restart. It glowed but then I never checked it again. After that i couldnt get the engine to start after about 2 hours of trying. Well being new at rc airplane engines, i kept trying to start when the glow starter was probably dead. There were no instructions that came with the glow starter so i didnt realize how long the glow starter lasts after a full charge. So my question is how long does a rechargeable glow starter lasts, or how many starts should i be able to get with it. At one point i was really hitting the prop hard trying ti flip start it, so is this bad for the engine and or could i have damaged it? Thanks for any replies.

im pretty new to nitro also so take my advice with caution. first, i dont know anything about rechargable starters but i would say that you should fully charge it then try again. also, did you follow the proper steps in breaking an engine in? did you prime the engine? by hitting the prop hard you could hurt the prop so it is dented(depends on how hard you hit it). i used a broom stick for awhile and twice i acutualy did not flip the prob all the way throught the cumbustion cycle and the engine kicked and started backwards
also would recomend an electric starter. SOOOOOOOO Much easier. if you were REALY trying to flip the prop through and it did not budge you could have hydro locked the engion.

A glow starter with a 1600 mah battery wont last very long on a charge. Glow plugs draws alot of power from the battery very fast! If the battery is fully charged, you should be able to fly at the field the better part of a day. But if your engine is beeing difficult you can easily half that time++

if then i try to start and fails for many times it could be because the engine is flooded in this case i open the glow plug and spin few times to make sure all the fuel is out of the cylinder then put the plug back on and try again to start.
another thing im doing is to prime the carb before you start it by doing this:
No glow starter yet!
after filling the tank i fill the carb cup with fuel,
swing the prop so the fuel sinks,
close the carb with my thumb and swing the prop 3-4 times so there is fuel in the fuel line and in the cylinder then glow plug starter and starting the motor.
try to do it with an instructor if you can.
if its a new engine read the engine's manual about break in.
my glow plug starters last for two to three days of flying and i have several of them just in case.
as for those AA battery glow plug starter are very handy and i have one of them as backup since they dont need to be charged from a specific wall charger but they hold less then the 1600-1800 mAh.

I charge my Sonictronics nistarters after a few trips to the field. They have meters on them to tell you the condition of the glo plug, good or failed. I carry two, just in case the first one dies. Plus it's nice to have a second one in case someone needs to borrow yours.

I have a Radio South re-chargeable glow driver. It is about 3 inches x 3 inches x 1.5 inches and has a series of LED's on the top to show glow activity. It also has internal NiCd batteries that seem to last forever. I charge it overnight before each flying day. It is three years old now and seems to work just as well now as it did when I first bought it.

there is no way a glow stick will last 2 hours....typical charge time for a glow stick would be 15 to 17 hours using the wall wart charger that comes with it.......best advice is get thee to the nearest club and seek knowledge from the locals you will find there...those locals will help you start the engine...good luck
