Default Great day!!

Today was a great day at the field. Ifinally got to solo my pts mustang. Iflew it three times, landing the third time with a dead stick (the pucker factor was still pretty high for me!). The guys at the field were great. They saw me fly my corsair and said they didn't think Iwould have any problems with the mustang. The mustang is a lot gentler than the corsair as it turns out. Ihad a really good coach nearby while Iwas in the air. The big difference between the two models is throttle management on final. The mustang seems to respond a little better to throttle inputs for managing the sink rate. Istill haven't been able to figure out why the engine quit, though. Idid see quite a bit of fuel in the carb while starting, and it idles great, but sometimes doesn't like to go from idle to full throttle quickly. There was also some fuel coming out from the bottom of the cowl. Ithink I need to pull it off and fuel-proof the firewall before my next trip out. When Ihad the flameout during the flight, Ihadn't changed throttle setting as I was on the upwind leg of my pattern preparing to turn left on the crosswind leg.

Anyway, sorry for the rambling. I think I still have some adrenaline left in my system! Thanks!

Congratulations.

On your deadstick and poor transition, it sounds like the low end mixture may be off a little but it's hard to say from behind a computer screen. I'm sure the guys at your field will be able to help you get it running great.

Be aware that there are several inherent problems with the Evolution engine as it comes.

- The ideal needle settings are normally outside the range that you can attain, as the limiters prevent good tuning!

- The needles tend to "walk" when the plane is warm and in flight!!!

This second problem is a biggie!

As you move the throttle up and down, the needles settings will CHANGE!

You need to cure BOTH problems.

- Pull the metal PEG out of the limiters. It will come out with a bit of force.

- Remove both needles and take the friction clips off.
- Bend the clips so they produce a stronger friction force.
- Re-install everything and re-tune.
- Once tuned, cut a piece of exhaust tubing to fit over the needles ( particularly the LS one ).
- Place the small tubing section over the LS needle to cause the clip to grip even more strongly.

This will prevent the problems you have.

I've even seen people put wire ties on the LS needle pressing the clip to the needle detents, once they had the engine tuned, to prevent the "walking".

I checked my engine today and am pretty sure the walking issue is what caused my deadstick landing. I can move the low-end needle around with my finger and high-end needle is really easy to turn now.
