The bottom of my tower hobbies thin CA rotted out. When I picked it up the remaining contents flooded out of the bottom of the bottle on to my entertainment center. (About a ¼ of the battle) I just used it a week ago and the bottle was fine. Apparently it has been seeping out of the corners of the bottle for a day or two, as there are cauliflower growths on three of the corners.

How do I clean this up? CA De-bonder seems to just make a gooey mess.

I don’t have much time to clean this mess up before the old lady gets off work. This is something I don’t wont to fess up to. I was told to take it back to my build room and to not levee it on the entertainment center. Oops

Well, I hate to be the bearer of bad news here, but you'd better practice your sucking up skills. If that much CA came out it's a pretty good bet you're not going to get it cleaned up. You can go to the hardware store and get some acetone which will do a good job of dissolving the CA. However, it's more than likely going to take the finish off of the wood as well. Either way, you're going to have some explaining to do.

Would nail polish remover work? I would probably have at least 130 mile trip to a hard wear store today. I’m running out of de-bonder.

Buy a quart of acetone. It will work well but make sure you have rubber gloves on or your skin will dry out.

You can get acetone at Wal-mart. Nail polish remover will work, but it is usually diluted acetone that usually has perfumes and other impurities in it. Like I said earlier, I would start preparing to face the piper here. Because anything that is going to remove the CA is also more than likely to remove the finish on the wood as well.

I think I’m going to get it. I am down to two peaces of the envelope the bottle was setting on. Glad I resisted the erg to dump the entire bottle of de-bonder.

People think I’m kidding when I say I live 130 miles from a box store or a Wal-Mart. Incidentally the closest hobby store is about the same distance

You should be able to get acetone at any building suppy store or paint store. Methyl ethyl ketone is also something you can try.

Get a vase and cut some flowers and place it over the mark, That may get you off for an hour or so, or until the "Ahh, that sweet" wears off and "they would look better over there, WHATTHEHISTHAT" kicks in.

Well I got the entertainment center cleaned up, but didn’t notes the drops on the hard wood floor.

Do all brands of CA have issues with the bottle being dissolved I see that my bottle of tower thick and medium have went hard and the coneflower growth is present on both of the other bottles. I know people that leave their CA open and don’t have the problems I’m having. Maybe I just need to use it faster.

Time to hone the old refinishing skills.
My wife siad to run out QUICK and buy a new entertainment center just like that one. Put the old one in your plane shop and say it was a garage sale find.

The entertainment center was hand built using three sheets of 3/4 oak MDF and an oak face frame. There isn’t any way for me to move this thing by my self and I think I used up my last bunch of willing friends when I put the new floor down. Fortunately the De-bonder didn’t eat the minwax poly finish. I hope I have as good a luck with the floor. Thank your wife for the suggestion.

Find somewhere to get [link=http://mercuryadhesives.com/]Mercury Adhesives[/link] CA. I won't list all the reasons their bottles don't do what others do...their page on "The Science" does a fine job of that.

Suffice to say, I've been using their stuff exclusively for 2+ years now, and it's everything they say it is, and then some.

I like to call it "half price CA"...because you actually get to use the entire bottle.

Just got the last spot on the floor. The cat only lost a half dollar patch of hair. Entertainment center and floor will not have to be refinished. I guess every thing came out will. Glad I had the de-bonder its been sitting on the shelf for three years and never opened.

Just say you got sick of the thing....throw the whole thing out....and run out and get a new one. SURPRISE HONEY!!!!


ALways have something underneath when working on furniture or the like. Maybe get a large piece of thin ply, MDF or I could even see corrigated plastic boards working(Pearl Arts supply). Gotta protect the home furnishings...and your life!

I keep my CA glue bottles in a large plastic cup in the refrigerator and my wife knows all about it.

i have that tower ca, built 2 planes with it. the problem is the dang cap it wont stay on after the the first build secssion. i used a tooth pick as a cap (plug the hole) and that works ok, never had the bottle leak though.

I think I’ve bought my last bottle of CA from tower who retiles the mercury glue. I don’t work over the furniture. The thin bottle was just setting on the entertainment center.
I got every thing cleaned up with out damaging anything and the hair on the cat will grow back.

To the best of my knowledge, that is not correct. I don't believe Mercury allows their stuff to be sold under another brand name.

Could easily be wrong though. Have you a source for that information?

Glad everything cleaned up OK. I've never thought of CAing the cat to the floor. We've got one that makes a run for the door as soon as it cracks open. Might work on him.

That is strange on the glue. I've had bottles go rock solid setting in my shop, but I've never had the bottlefail like that. I would call tower and ask for an explaniton. Has anyone else had their CA bottle do that???

Straight nitromethane is a good solvent for CA. Harder to find than acetone though.
