I am helping to get a friend of mine into the hobby, he has athunder tiger 42 engine in his thunder tiger trainer. We don't know what type of fuel was used. A guy at the hobby store told him that if castor was used, then using synthetic will hurt the engine or at best the engine won't run well. I have not heard that before, is there truth to that? If so, what is the best way to tell if castor was used in the engine?
Thanks

I've never heard that. Use whatever you got

I know some engines like castor, I have an older k&B outboard boat engien that I have heard loves high nitro and loves castor.

Sounds like another one of those myths that people repeat over and over with nothing to support it.
I used fuel with castor oil for a couple years then switched to synthetic and had no problem with my engines whatsoever.

More an more these days everytime someone starts out a question with that phrase I get glassy eyed real quick. Seems at a majority of LHS's anymore at best you may find a 'guy' if you are lucky who has stepped out the back door and flittered around with some foamy a little.
I agree with the others. Use whatever fuel you wish, I prefer a bit-o-castor but don,t use it because of that silly statement from some guy.

The Thunder Tiger .42 is a plain bushed crank engine and it would be better to use a fuel that has at least a little Castor in it.
Morgan's Omega or Powermaster Sport, or something along those lines.

Fact is today it's hard for a LHS to find anyone that is really into the hobby so they hire whoever will work and be there on time. Sometimes these people were once into the hobby but a bit behind times. The hobby is moving so fast these days I haven't been able to keep up with it either so I try not to judge but I do hear a lot of old dogma being spouted. The debate about Castor will be with us for years to come.

Yep, go in and ask for a Pitts muffler for an OS whatever at the LHS around here and it's like you asked for weapons grade plutonium or something. I've actually had them pull up the Tower site and let me find what I want so they can order it. Of course if you want role playing games, trading cards or gargoyle figurines, they know all about those.
