Default Black Friday

Ihave had some email adverts sent to me from the US saying 'Black Friday sale.....'. It is not Friday the 13th (a Black Friday) or anything else I can think of, so what is the meaning of Black Friday? Just curious.

Cheers

It is a term regarding the day after the Thanksgiving Holiday (which was today). Retailers try to get you to start shopping for the Christmas Holiday by offering up a few really good deals. The "black" comes from old accounting terms I believe... black ink for profit and red ink for losses.

It used to be that a lot of people, especially women, would do some shopping on the day after Thanksgiving simply because most have the day off from work. Now it has become some sort of over-hyped, over-marketed ritual. It kind of distracts from the whole point of Thanksgiving and family if you ask me. I'm not getting up early to stand in line waiting in the elements for some store to open for anything. Not that I don't like good deals and getting cool stuff of course.

Instead the wife and I will likely have breakfast and maybe take a drive up into the mountains if the weather looks good. I'd love to be flying too but I figure she deserves a day with me now and then.

Thank you for your reply, that is all sorted in my mind. I forgot about Thanksgiving, as we don't have that celebration in New Zealand. I think your idea for the day sounds much better than shopping. Hope you have a good trip to the mountains.

Cheers

While you are up there go take a look at my house and buy it!! Just make me an offer!!!
In the US the stores have gone completely nuts, Xmas trees and Xmas items already out on display two weeks before Halloween. By the time Xmas rolls around your sick seeing it all and watching all the adds on TV. Just a marketing ploy, hope it isn't world wide! Used to be kids didn't see anything Santa until black Friday. The magic is gone.

I have $11 in my wallet if that sounds good to you... I'll sign the paperwork first thing Monday.

Speaking of doing holiday stuff way too early, we stopped in a Walgreens on the way home tonight and they had some valentine's day merchandise on the shelf. I could not believe it. Christmas is still a month away and they have crap for a day that won't even happen until February of next year. Does anything make sense any more? I know that is off topic for this forum but it absolutely drives me nuts.

What I don't understand is those that will get up at oh-dark-thirty to wait in line, in the cold, and in the case of NJ this year, the rain, to wait for these stores to open, then they all rush in, some complaining about people pushing and shoving, being generally agressive.

I don't understand it at all. I prefer to do my shopping on my own terms... and because we lost our two local hobby shops this year, well, it looks like some of that shopping will be done via the internet where I don't have to wait in line, and can do it any time I feel like doing it.

Chuck, your just a bit light but it is the best offer to date!!
Last night at 11 the news was showing how people have lined up and are using tents to sleep in? They really are calling it tent city and Best Buy put out Porta Potty's in the parking lot for the people!! They have tents put up on the side walk in front of the stores! Haven't seen any bunny eggs yet but any day now!! The TV is really starting to hit us hard with adds already!!

It was nuts around here today. We ended up staying in town looking at tile and bathroom fixtures. Traffic was bumper to bumper. Nuts.

We stopped by the hobby shop so I could get some Cool Power 15% fuel. they had none, not cool Power at all in fact. It has been that way for a couple weeks. Very sad.

Now the weather looks lousy so who knows if I will actually get to fly this weekend.

I can up the offer on the house up to $27 but that's pretty much all I got.

The sad part is this really is the best offer I have gotten.
Chuck, that nasty hobby shop used to carry Power Master?? I'm going to get cleaned up now and head across town to Nice Twice and pick up some of the stuff I ordered, took three days to get here!! That shop in Fresno and the one in Merced the orders tended to never get there. Hobby People is having a sale so I will go there for fuel and I need to get some info on electric power. I really want to build a park flyer this winter.
