Default Hello from a Heli pilot! Shoping for starter plane.

ok im looking for something nice and gentle to tool around with. I love/addicted to helis but the low cost of these trainer planes got me thinkin about giving planes a lil bit of my time.

Heres where im at right now:
Futaba 9chp Tx
webra52 aar heli engine
heli tuned pipe (CY muscle pipe v1)

Heres the plane Im thinkin about getting. http://morrishobbies.com/reviews/wasp-review.html

Any thoughts on this plane? Is it a popular model plane? I want to use my extra heli eng and tuned pipe in it till I get another heli for it. Pease tell me thoughts on this combo. Thanks.

Default Hello from a Heli pilot! Shoping for starter plane.

Hi Jeff,
I went to the site and checked the price, beside looking the plane over. The plane has the "normal" trainer look and weight. The wing span is slightly smaller than most trainers in the .40 size. The thing I did not like .... for a trainer and first fixed wing aircraft, is the bolt-on wing. MOST people, including myself WANT this feature, but, for a person just getting started there may be some wing hits, cartwheels, etc. The rubber band attachment will act as a shock absorber and just knock the wing out of line most of the time, minimizing damage to the wing and the fuse. (of course not on a major crash)
I learned on a Hobbico SuperStar .40 and it was a terrific plane. (not because I say so... but there are a lot of them in our training program, and also at the other club I belonged too. The trainees I have spoken too, like them too). I repaired mine 4 times and flew it 150 flights before the last crash.... a MAJOR hit!! The last 50 flights were flown as a tail dragger conversion. The Superstar cost is the same at
Tower Hobbies... see link below.

Hope this helps.......lownslo

PS... The Superstar is covered in Monokote. Not sure what the Wasp is.

The Wasp won't be quite as "gentle" as many other trainers, a flat bottom wing would be more gentle. But it does look like it would be a decent flying aircraft.

It seems to present less frontal area to the airstream, and the (semi?) symmetrical wing will allow for more aerobatics when (if) you want them.

Unfortunately, when I just visited the Morris site, it said they were out of stock.

With your present skills, that plane should be just fine.

Ghia,
I assume you have flown some planks on your simm?? Have you had any stick time at all with a plane? I'm guessing you can handle much more than a trainer. I fly both helis and planes and recently let a heli guy fly a plane. He had no trouble at all.

I would think about a profile. They are slow and maneuverable like a heli and you'll have a blast. With a little practice, you'll be hovering it just like a heli!

if you are an accomplished heli pilot, I think you will get bored with that plane really fast. Look at the Goldberg Falcon III. It is a little faster, still a trainer, but is capable of more advanced stuff. I learned on the older version of this plane and it is a great flyer. You will pick it up fast and be able to do more with it. You won't get bored of it as fast.

Default I want to thank everyone for the tips!

Flyboy I would like to see that falcon you are talkin about thanks :]

Greenboot,
I do have G2 and have countless hours on the sim in heli mode and I have a xcell 30 and 50 heli . I have sampled all the planes on there but i cant land them for sh__. :]
Thanks for the vote of confidence on my flight abilities :] but alas since forward flight with my old nexus heli many years ago, so these new helis havent seen air time quite yet. They are almost finished. So I am a reborn newbe rc pilot.

Lownslo, I like your super star. Seems I still have alot of plane choices to think about.

i would like to get a taste of planes here in 2 months or so. Is a 50 size heli eng/tuned pipe too strong for a 40 size trainer? Again thanks for any tips.
And Of couse I gotta know how ya'll hover these planes :]:]

That would be a bit strong, but if you had a standard muffler it would be fine. Many will disagree and tell you more power is better, so it's up to you.

You won't get bored with the Wasp, like the CGM Falcon, the Wasp also has a semi-symetrical wing, not a flat-bottom like most trainers.

But if you're not dead set on the Wasp, look at the Falcon, or the Easy Sport by Great Planes.

here is a link, the falcon 56 paint job is way better than this. I don't know why they dumped a great paint job for a boring one. The old look sold more airplanes. This one looks boring, but it isn't. The old was met blue leading edge, white from the spar back, fuse was blue on top with red on bottom and a white stripe up the middle that had an arrow head on the front. Looked sharp.
