The cub is a 48". The 1/2 " is in the book for high rate and 3/8" for low.
When I did it first it seemed very little so I just wanted to make sure I am measuring it correctly.

Yes it is better somebody to tell you from his experience instead of finding out the hard way.
I am almost ready. All servos and throws are adjusted as good as I can.
Only the balancing remains...

How do you balance it?
It says 1-7/8" behind the leading edge of the wing.
That's ok. But how much bellow the wing?
I assumed that it doesn't matter how much bellow and that it should be ok if I hold the plane on the wing at 1-7/8 and it stays horizontal...

Pla,
You balance that plane 1 7/8ths" back from the leading edge, on the underside of the wing, "where it meets the fuselage".
Place a small mark on the wing, close to the fuse, then balance the plane with one fingertip on each mark. It should be level or slightly nose down.
NOW, the more you say, the more I believe this will be your first RC flight. You have NOT said anything about who is going to be helping you.
PLEASE do not try this by yourself. If you felt bad because someone broke the stab, how will you feel when you're using a trash bag to pick up all those little pieces?

yes - it will be my first flight at all - never controlled RC plane before.
The book mentioned the plain didn't have self recovery as primary trainers do. But when I bought it (online) it was mentioned that it is a "nice first plane" so I decided that it would do as a trainer but would be more aerobatic then normal trainers.
My wife said she would help me - if not with flying at least with the trash bag ...
I will go to an RC club near by and will defenetly look for an instructor.
The engine needs to be broken in and they require inspections on new planes. I will ask for help and advise.
The club is at Fremont, CA (SF bay area).

for breaking in your engine, just run it 2x's. first time at like full throttle and kinda rich, and the second time varying between 1/2 and full throttle switching about every 1 minute for each setting.

Welcome to this wonderful and demanding Hobie. I was wondering what brand and type of transmitter you have. As a beginner I would advise you to program some expo in to the control surfaces. That way it would help you to not over control the plane.
Remember to be gentle on the sticks. And if you do get into trouble full up elevator and full power until you have some altitude. And ask for (actually scream) for help.
