Default Evolution 46 Problem

Hello-

I tried tuning the new Evolution 46 on my Hangar 9 J-3 Cub PNP this afternoon, but I experienced a problem. The engine runs fine at full throttle for about a minute but then bogs down and quits without reducing the throttle. The engine seems to idle okay. Even if I keep the engine at full throttle, the engine still bogs down to about half speed and eventually quits. Any ideas?

Thanks!

sounds like you are running it lean. try opening up the needle valve a half a turn and see what that gets you. You could also have an obstruction in the fuel system that is not letting the needed fuel through at full throttle.

Sounds like it's lean to me also. It's overheating and shutting down. Make sure you run a new engine rich for a few tanks.

How to solve a problem with an evolution engine: Unscrew it and replace it with a decent motor like an OS or a Thunder Tiger. Never heard a good report about them and the people I know that have bought them have replaced them very quickly. They do however make an excellent sinker on the end of a fishing line.

I have thought about just putting my Tower 46 on the cub, but I then probably wouldn't be able to use my cowl because it wouldn't fit the engine. I was thinking about flying my H9 J-3 40 cub without the cowl anyways.

The best thing for the Evolution Engine is the trash can. GET A O.S. !

I'm using Evoluion .45 from Hangar 9's Mustang PTS MKII, well, it's factory pre-broken in from factory. It's flying great. Evolution is chinese, Magnum is chinese, ASP is chinese, but these engines are running great. I just started today breaking in my Magnum .46 XLS, that engine can scream. I don't know there should be a way, I would hate it to be trashed.

The evolution you are trying to tune is a good engine don't throw it away. You need to remove the high speed and low speed limiters. They do not let you properly tune the engine. Do a search on here and it will tell you exactly how to do it. I have three of these engines and they all run great after i removed the limiters. Good luck

I have 3 evo 46 engines andno problem. Start by taking off the stops on the high speed needle and run it up to a clean 2 cycle, Never run an ABC engine rich it has to be up to operating temp. I have put the engines in planes to replace OS and I love them.[sm=teeth_smile.gif]

i have one on a Alpha One Trainer (newer one with 2.4 gig)   I have had no problems, starts with the 1st flip with a stick.  All you naysayers out there, it seems to have more than enough power and idles with ease.  It's just like buying a new car, sometimes you get a good one, and sometimes it has to be worked on.

Could be lean, could be an air leak, or could be the wrong glow plug. Evolutions need an A3 plug, not a #8 like most other engines.

After replacing the fuel tank and fuel lines, I flew my H9 J-3 40 Cub PNP yesterday. The engine did not quit at full throttle this time. At times it would slow down and speed up a little bit at full throttle, but not nearly as much as before. I ran the engine pretty rich. Maybe I just need to be patient with the engine and let it get through the break-in period.

Thanks!

Bj, how old is your plane and did you buy it new? The reason I ask is I also have a PnP H-9 Cub that came with the Evolution 46 NT and had more than my share of issues with it. I ran a tank of fuel through it on the ground before the maiden flight and all seemed well. The following weekend I took it out for it's maiden flight, fired it up and let it run for a few seconds, held the nose up at a 45 degree angle and it ran fine. I taxied into position, throttled up and took off. About 50 feet up and down wind the engine quit. I got it back down safely and the only damage was a broken prop. I fired it up again, adjusted the needles and again all seemed well. I took off and about 150 feet up I saw something fall from the plane. It was the left wheel. I got it back down again but broke another prop so I was done for the day. The next time I took it out is when I had all of my problems. I adjusted the carb, took off and during the climb out the engine quit again. After a sweet dead stick landing I adjusted and tried again however during the takeoff roll I ground looped it and was done for the day. I took the tank out and re-plumbed it, replaced the line from the high speed needle to the carb, tried different glow plugs, you name it and I tried it but to no avail. I called Horizon Hobbies customer support and the tech said it sounded like a bearing was leaking air and since it was under warranty to send it in which I did. They said they replaced almost every piece of the engine but still couldn't get it to run right so they sent me a brand new Evolution 46 NX which runs fantastic and has lots of power. If you're still having problems with it and it's still under two years since you purchased it it may still have some warranty left on it. If not call them anyway and see what they say. They still may be able to help.

Default RE: Evolution 46 Problem

I bought the plane off the ceiling of a hobby shop in December. The plane was fully assembled but had never been flown before. I maidened the plane on Easter (this past Sunday and put about seven flights on the plane. My engine didn't stall after I replaced the fuel tank and fuel tubing, but I am a bit nervous about flying the plane again because I do not trust the engine.

By the way, my wheel fell off in the air, too. I managed to land the plane without any damage. The plane flipped upside down once it hit the ground, but I landed it at a slow enough speed so that it didn't matter. What did you do to secure the wheel? The same wheel fell off again later in the day while I was taxing on the runway.

Thanks!

If I remember correctly, I filed a flat spot on the axle so the set screw had something to hold on to and used blue Loctite on the set screw. I called Horizon and told them one of the wheels had fallen off during flight and they sent me a new pair no questions asked. I later found the wheel and put the new set on my old version of the H-9 Cub. As far as not trusting the I know the feeling. Even with the new engine I was a little nervous but after the first flight my feelings have changed for the better. I flew the stuff out of it and it performed flawlessly. If yours runs better now it's probably alright. I think mine was a fluke. If I needed a new 46 size engine I would probably go with a new Evolution. But my plan for the future is a Saito Fa62 on this plane. My old Cub has a Saito Fa56 and it runs fantastic.
