Default stupid prop question

Is there a propper way to put on a prop to minimize vibration, I mean with it at 1 oclock with the engine at the compresion stroke...or can you just screw it on anyway lol

There's a slim chance that it will run smoother in a certain position

I always just make them horizontal when coming up on the compression stroke

I make them horizontal on the compression stroke. I figure they stay out of the way during a possible dead stick landing that way.

On one gasser, I noticed that vibrations were reduced GREATLY when the cylinder was at TDC with the prop horizontal to the motor.

The prop I used was fully balanced too.

As a result of the above I've taken to doing the same with my other engines.

I've also seen this suggested on other threads... but your results may vary.

On glow engines you may find that the engine runs smoother when the heavy blade of the prop is aligned with the crankshaft counter balance.

Interesting... for my own edification, what is the logic behind this?

That the cylinder side is effectively heavier without the prop?

Most engines (2C glow) could use additional counter balance weight. I seldom balance small props, but just determine if one blade is heavier with a very simple balance.

Dittos to what high plains said.[8D]

I can confirm possibly not exactly the same but with the small general aviation engine the Continental C-85 typical of Cubs, airnockers and Ercoupes etc. that there are six possible propellor/crankshaft orientations possible due to the bolt pattern. When the McCauley metal prop is used one of those positions there will be a very noticible vibration in flight and it can be eliminated simply by rotating the prop to any of the other five positions.
