RE: Let's meet the new guys!

Hi there! My name is David and I am a 46 year old unemployed Project Engineer. A close friend got me involved in this sport by asking me to help him build a Top Flite AT6 Texan. Upon seeing the box contents, I knew we needed some 'educating before jumping in. In the last three months I have managed to: locate and join a local flying club (with a field 6 miles from my house); join the AMA; purchase, learn the basics on and solo on a third hand Hobbico SuperStar 40 (with more patches and tape than original covering); purchase, assemble and get a club instructor test fly a new Sig LT-40; finish the wing, and infanage (sp?) of a Sig Kadet Senior and continue to review the instructions of the AT6.

The help I've recieved here (and reviewing Model Sport Videos) has been invaluable. What an incredible source of information! The help and patience offered from my fellow club members has been very uplifting (since it took me about twice as long to solo as most folks in the club:eek:) and reassuring.

To all of those folks out there that help us new guys....THANK YOU!!!:)

Hello! My name is Clay, I'm 26 years old, and a Mechanical Engineer at an aluminum rolling mill. I'm getting back into the R/C hobby after an 8 year siesta. I 'used' to fly Stiks, StickIts, 4*40s, and the like a few years ago, but now Im back to flying an CG Eagle 2. Ive flown a couple of times in the last 2 weeks, and flying R/C is really like riding a bike, you never really forget how! I would have 're-soloed' the last time I flew but I cracked up the front of my plane, so looks like it will have to be this week! Ive already got my eye on a few other planes and can't wait to get back to something a big faster and more agile in the coming months.

Hi, my name is Ben. I'm hardly a new face to this forum, but I am still new to RC flight. I built my LT-40 between January and May (had to take my time because I had to save for the next major purchase). I banged up my LT-40 taxiing it around the yard and made some excellent improvements to the structural integrity of the craft. I'm in my 3rd year of college, studying Civil Engineering, with my focus on construction and structural design. I havent found a club that I like yet, but may have stumbled across one recently. I love to build planes, but cant fly them yet!

My name is Chris, 37 years young. Work at Canandaigua Motorsports (Honda, Suzuki, and Triumph motorcyle, ATV, PWC dealership.)
Purchased my first plane back in '98, made the mistake of telling the wife I wouldn't fly it til the home-improvement projects were done. (R they ever?!) First flight was in July of 2000, spent rest of the summer playing with H9 Easy Fly 40. Crashed it on a gusty day, bought another trainer, built a Dazzler.40, Aresti .40, Super Chipmunk and a Beechcrat Bonanza.

Still flying the trainer as my "cahonies" aren't up to flying the other ones. (Didn't fly at all last year because life got in the way![:@]) Started flyin' trainer again this year. Charged my new radio and the Dazzler batteries last night, might take it out on wednesday;).

Can't get enough of this hobby/self abuse...need another job to support my habit:D.

Is there any such thing as R/Cers anonymous.

love this site.

WOW!

What a collection of misfits! LOL

Actually, I have a lot in common with most of you. Here's a little of MY background.

I was introduced to RC as a child because my dad flew (He's now 82 and still flying every day) I first learned on single channel escapements, and progressed through the ranks as the technology progressed. I flew junior pattern as a teenager, Worked as a jet mechanic in the Navy for 4 yrs, then I gave it up for a while when I got married. My wife said I had more important things to spend OUR money on. So I got back into it after the divorce. :D

I spent about 15 years as a machinist (The last 6 working on CAD Systems for C-5 Cargo Planes for the New York Air Nat. Guard) And nowadays I spend my time as a graphic artist for a family owned marketing firm in rural Minnesota.

I also spend much of my time here at RCU, moderating a few of the forums, and doing product reviews for RCU Magazine (If you haven't seen the Magazine yet, just click on 'Magazine' at the top of the page. It's FREE!)

As far as what I am flying now, I have been so busy with product reviews this summer, that I haven't flown any of my OWN planes much this year, but when I do, it is mostly my GP Supre Skybolt, or my 27% Extra 300.

http://204.96.183.34/Skybolt/Skybolt026.jpg

That said, I, and several other very knowledgeable people spend many hours a day hanging out here. So feel free to keep the questions coming, there's bound to be someone lurking around who can help you out!

And feel free to post an answer to someone else's questions if you have a good solution to their problem.

Once again. Welcome to RCU!

(PS Robert, the meeting you want is two doors down on the left :D )

RE: Let's meet the new guys!

I'm not sure what qualifies as "new", but what the heck.

I'm 33, and working at a code slinger for hire in DC (read computer programmer).

I started flying when I was around 14, and flew though out school. Went to RPI to major in Electrical Engineering. Turns out, the school has (or had) an RC club that owned a small selection of aircraft and provided free fuel to students. I started doing flight instruction at this time, since there were only 3 guys who were competent enough to fly with out help, and I found I have fun doing instruction most of the time. Due to lack of money and time, a couple of moves and getting married I dropped out of the hobby for a while.

Then, my father (who never flew, but was really supportive when I started) surprised me a few years back when a big box showed up at my door via Fedex from Tower Hobbies. Turned out to be a trainer/radio/engine combo. So I put it together (taking almost a year to find the time) and discovered that it does come back like riding a bike.

I also discovered that RC Combat was now an organized event with it's own SIG and recognized by the AMA, and that there were a couple of combat pilots in my local club. I've been hooked on flying Combat since then, and it turns out I'm not half bad at it either :D.

I also started doing flight instruction again, and found that it's still as much fun as it was. I apparently missed the meeting when they were looking for someone to take over the flight training program at my club, so I got the job.

I just wanted to pop-in and say Howdy to some new and some not-so-new folks...

This is a great resource for RC'ers of all experience levels so if you have a question or want some advice, just ask- (If I can't answer it, I will find somebody who can- Jeremy?)

Seriously, welcome to RCU!

Hi, My name is Dennis. I am 30 and am nearly finished building my GP PT-40 trainer. My friend has been flying for many years and I was hooked the first time I saw him fly it. I like reading posts here very much. There is so much information here. I can't wait to get in the air, hopefully before winter. I am already thinking about a second plane since I really enjoy building them.

Nice to meet everyone!

The masses call me Robert. I'm 25, and I'm a web developer by trade. I've got a supportive wife, and a 10 month old daughter, who loves to watch the planes.

I bought my Avistar back in 2000, and learned the basics. I had a co-worker that owned an Aerobatic Piper, and we'd go flying from time to time. Turns out, he also flew the R/C types. Being more affordable, it peaked my interest. I bought my plane, and learned the basics of R/C.

Shortly thereafter, I took a 3 year break from the sport as life became more demanding... but since moving back home to Kansas, I've gotten back into the swing of it. I typically fly every weekend, weather permitting.

RE: Let's meet the new guys!

High, Im Brian (35 yrs old) and have always wanted to fly rc but never had the money to spare to get into the hobby and recently I talked my 8 year old son onto wanting to fly so this gave me an excuse with my wife to buy my first plane, It was a cheap electric twin engine 2 channel and we managed to destroy it in 2 days, well I bought another one and it made it about a week. My wifes blood preaure starting rising when I just happened to be in the front yard at midnoght trying to fly, it was then obvious that I was the one wanting the planes. I then made a huge mistake and bought a Megatech Electric Skyliner, this plane only flew for about 10 seconds at a time and went through 5 gearshafts (not a good beginner plane). Well after reading hear alot, I decided to get Hobbico Suprtstar Select .40 from Tower Hobbies. I live in NC and it arrived the day before the Hurricane did, so this gave me somthing to do while I sat at home with my son and wife. Well, I stated with some help for some kind people on this board and I just drove it on the ground around the neighborhood. I really want to fly but donr have alot of nerve to go ask for help, I have a little problem with asking anyone to help me. But I have held out for about a week now. I plan on either crashing and burning soon or asking for help. I am glad to be among you all. I hope you all well accept me into this fabulous forum.

Hi, My name is Mike. I'm 41 years old and I've been hanging around RCU since December 2002. I started flying a friends LT-40 around then and ordered myself an LT-40 kit in Jan. I've been flying solo now for about 3 months I guess but only get to fly about once a week if I'm lucky. I am a project manager at a large machine & fab shop in Birmingham, Al. This sight is great and I know I wouldn't be as far along as I am without it. Thanks again to all who offered their help.

Hi, name's Mike. I've been flying for about 20 years but have taken a few years off to raise kids. Just got a new plane to teach my son to fly. This Hobbico 40 is in the trash now. Guess who crashed it yesterday? It wasn't my son. Tried to make an adjustment on the buddy box while flying too low and you can guess the rest.

Out of dozens on planes this is the most fun plane I've ever had. OS .10 at half throttle fly bys at 5 feet. Guss Morfiss plans. Sorry if I got the name wrong, it's been a long time.

Hey all,

Love the site. I'm 26 year old single male.... Ooops wrong board. Anyhow, my other interests are computers (LINUX!!!!!!), jeeps, farming, homesteading, well... darn near anything outdoors also. I've always been drawn to staring at these little devils zipping through the sky when planting/plowing/what have you near r/c fields. A few months ago, I was driving back from dinner with a friendly female. As we passed a hobby shop, I mentioned that it'd be nice to build a plane. A few weeks later a Noorduryn Norseman from Unionville was waiting for me. Called my bluff she did. I've put some time into building it and DON'T want to see it become a motorized tent peg. I'm sure I'll be picking up a trainer here soon.

Thanks for all of the great ideas/opinions you folks throw out.

Forgot to mention that The State of New Jersey pays for this addiction by employing me as a network & unix admin.

I'm Ron... My first plane is my Avistar, and I'm lovin it. Haven't crashed (yet!). This site is a great resource for everyone in the hobby. I can't remember the saying about learning (pertaining to scientific discovery I believe) having to do with standing tall on the shoulders of others, but it sure does apply here!!!!!!!! I'm currently working on a C182 ARF when I'm not teaching college students pursuing a professional pilot career.

Hi,

I'm Matt. I am 26. I work at a stainless steel rolling mill as a mechanical maintenance engineer in Ghent Kentucky. I went to Purdue, grew up in Indiana. I always wanted to fly R/C planes but never had any money, so I kinda forgot about it. My uncle brought out his on the fourth of July this year and let me fly it, since then I've been totally addicted. I have been flying an aerobird since July and now I am ready for a real plane. I am going to get a Sig LT 40 this Friday. The only thing I dont like about this hobby is that for me, its REALLY addicting! My fiance is starting to get annoyed because its all I talk about. I dream about it. I don't know if this is normal or not. But I plan on staying with this hobby forever, or until I go bankrupt.

This forem has been a huge help. I have learned a lot from the people here and I am sure I will learn a lot more.

RE: Let's meet the new guys!

I just got into this hobby in June of this year and love it! I wanted to get into it about three years ago, but the guys I worked with talked me into 1/10 scale on-road R/C instead. Converted to 1/8 scale buggy racing after moving to Northern California two years ago. I Thought that learning to fly would be easy since I already knew how to drive the cars. Was I wrong!

I'm a semi-retired electrical engineer and guitarist. I teach classical guitar and currently play in two different musical groups. So far, I've been able to fly at least once a week.;)

Eventually I'd like to use a wireless video cam to get some pictures from the plane, but for now, I'm happy to fly my Tower Hobbies 40 size trainer. My second plane is a VMAR VAN RV-4. I can hardly wait for it to come back from Richmond RC (hopefully the wing halves will fit properly this time) so I can begin work on it.

Brian, you don't have to ask for help. Just drop by your nearest Flying Field with your plane. You will have to fight off the helpers with a stick!

Hello all!! My name is Nik! First I must say this is truly the best forum I have seen for anything!! Great job! I'm 29, married, and two kids (4 and 1). I have recently decided to get back into this hobby, as you all know it is more addictive than Amsterdam heroin!! I got out of it (the hobby) once my first child was born. Had to put money towards diapers, toys, etc... Now that my son is 1, I went out and bought an RTF Alpha for a quick and snappy return. Just something to hold me over as I build my winter project which at the moment is undecided. I figured I would start over the right way this time. I was a self taught flier, and picked up some bad habits, like crashes! Anyway, I work at Love Field in downtown Dallas, TX as a Learjet Mechanic for Bombardier Aerospace. We recently moved down here from Wichita, Kansas. I worked on the production line up there building Lear 45's. I love my job and see things most people can only dream of, therefore I try not to take it for granted. I often catch myself staring outside watching airplanes land and take off. I guess you could call me a "Plane Junkie". I go to work and fix airplanes, and come home and build, fly and probably fix more airplanes. I'm sure glad my wife loves me so much!!! If any of you are ever in town and can give me some notice I can try and take you down to the shop. Not too many people see the inside of a 60 million dollar jet!! I look forward to all your advice, help, flames, and criticism!

Hello, kinda forgot to post...

My name's Mark, I'm 18 and I'm from good old England! Proper English accent and everything :D

Anyway, i've just got into RC flying, after racing cars for a long time I decided planes were the way to go. I've been flying my Ripmax 40 trainer for about a month or two now, and I've reached the stage where I can land and take off, do circuits etc. by myself. I'm waiting to take my BMFA A Test, and then I'm gonna move on to learing aerobatics. I'm desperatly wanting to build a scale warbird, then maybe a twin scale. So many ideas!!

Ps. The forum is brilliant!
