Almost busted at LHS
I think I need some counseling or something. I need another plane like I need another hole in my head. I went to the LHS today with some money in my pocket and almost started WWIII at "Cruzomatic" residence. I was strongly looking at the WM T-34, Sig LT-40 and Avistar. (I like trainers) I was also eyeing the magnum 54. I debated, debated and then debated. The cell phone goes, 'ring, ring, ring, wife on other line,,,She says,,,'where are you'. Uhhh,,,at the store. You're not at the hobby shop are you??? Uhh, no honey. She says, "honey, DON'T BUY ANOTHER PLANE." I got scared, mad and then scared some more. I quickly bought a gallon of fuel and bolted for the door before I did the unthinkable. Geezzzzz, that was close. I need help,,,,,

RE: Almost busted at LHS
Welcome to the sickness we call RC. There is a thread titled "you might be addicted if......." that was interesting.
I set a goal to keep the planes/kits to under 2 dozen. That didn't work. I set it again at 3 dozen. That didn't work either. I have set new goals! I just haven't decided what they should be so there have been no rules broken. EXCAP232 |
RE: Almost busted at LHS
Whoa!
EXCAP, how many planes DO u have? |
RE: Almost busted at LHS
LOL, I'm up to 7 planes, but I've been flying for 3+ years so I have an excuse.
|
RE: Almost busted at LHS
Hey Cruz. Ya gotta keep em scattered out so thay can't all be seen at the same time.
Like some in the house, a couple in the storage, maybe the garage, at work etc. A trailer helps too... Of course I never have more than one or two :) Larry |
RE: Almost busted at LHS
You have to finish every plane in the same exact color scheme! That way, she'll think you only have one!;)
...but then, the P-51 will sure look funny in a U-CAN-DO paint job! :D Jesse |
RE: Almost busted at LHS
Somehow I have been able to hide them.. House... real airplane hanger.. garage ect.. But I have like 15
|
RE: Almost busted at LHS
7?? Tell your wife that I have 8 and have only been doing this for 2 years :D Maybe she'll let you buy another... ;)
|
RE: Almost busted at LHS
3D, I'll give that a try. I'll let you know. ;) I hope your sofa is one of those sofa sleepers. I may need to borrow it.
|
RE: Almost busted at LHS
LOL the same thing happens to me but its my mom on the other line.
|
RE: Almost busted at LHS
I have a trick that I use when I get a new plane. I have a friend that deals in RC stuff he has lots of good things. I always tell my wife that I traded some of my stuff for some of his stuff. She never knows how many planes that I go thru. I sell some and trade some so that I can always get some more. So far it has worked pretty good. Just keep the money somewhere safe and spend it wisely.

RE: Almost busted at LHS
May I suggest the following:
"Gee honey, you're right. I do have too many airplanes. Maybe it's time I sold them and took up a new hobby.... maybe judging lap dances?" I can see one of two outcomes... either models become a non-issue, or you hear from her attorney :D Good Luck!! Jim |
RE: Almost busted at LHS
Three planes, and two engines in 5 months...I think I got it!
|
RE: Almost busted at LHS
finish all planes in the same covering scheme... your wife won't be able to tell when you get a new one
|

|
RE: Almost busted at LHS
Geez I feel for you guys, my wife MAKES me get a new plane/engine/radio once in awhile.
Even when I have a whole room dedicated to storing them, and all the "supplies" and I can fly one a day for a week with chance left over, she says, "honey, are you loosing interest, you haven't bought a plane, or been to the hobby shop in awhile?" I know, some guys have all the luck.....my life is SOOOO hard.;) Jetts |
RE: Almost busted at LHS
At least your wife doesn't call the hobby shop before she tries your cell phone.:(
|
RE: Almost busted at LHS
Hey crusomatic,
Perhaps when she called, you should have said. "No honey, I am not at the Hobby Shop, I am at the Jewelry Store." :-). Of course, it all depends on YOUR wife, and your budget. I know of some wives that can't be bribed, I know of some that don't care, and I know of some that no matter how much she is "bribed" she won't hear of it. In other words, it's like apples and oranges, you can't compare your wife to someone elses--but you already knew that. I am really lucky that I have one that isn't any of these. If we have the extra money, it's okay with her. If we don't have the extra money, I wouldn't buy one, but she would be miffed if I did. I know a fellow flier that works his ass off so she can have a big house, top of the line Ford SUV, plenty of jewlery, nice clothes, and anything else her heart desires. But, if he even mentions buying an airplane she gets mad and won't talk to him for days. If he does have an airplane, she doesn't want him to go fly--ever. He has turned to buying planes behind her back and hidding them at the shop. But, he never gets to go fly, so there isn't much point in having them--IMO. He keeps hoping she will change, but he hasn't figured it out in two years so we're still waiting. I am not sure there is any moral to the story, or any solution to your situation. You could get another job, but then when could you fly? I hate to see husbands hide things from their wives, but, I also hate to see wives pressure husbands to the point they feel the need to hide things from them. Best wishes in finding a happy medium and getting a new airplane. fyi--I have been married for 25+ years, to the same wife! ;). |
RE: Almost busted at LHS
I hear ya. You must know my wife as she is just about what you descibed, not quite like your buddies, but similar. For the most part she doesn't support my flying hobby. We have a new son (19 month old) and she now says my hobby should be him. I only work on my planes late night when he's in bed, not wanting to take time from him. I do fly on the weekends though and try to fly once a week as I have a 4 day work week. I also enjoy the accordion, woodworking, running and lifting weights. She says, "I have too many hobbies". Our marriage is kinda funny though, having once filed for divorce and such, just never went through with it. We have a ton of differences, a lot of them are control issues I think. We can go out to dinner and treat her family when they're in town, spend 80.00+ on dinner, then go shopping with her mother spend another 150.00+, just bough a new cell phone 100.00+ and spends here and there. If I spend, 129.00(plane), 80.00 (engine) and 85.00(flight pack) I'm in the wrong. I'm a saver, she's a spender, go figure. No way I'm working two jobs.

RE: Almost busted at LHS
Women seem to get weird after having children for some reason. I think it is difficult for them to deal with the hormonal changes. She has a point about your son being your new hobby. But it sounds like you are also aware of the importance of being with your son, by building after bedtime. It is tough when wives think that the husbands job is to make money and the wifes job is to spend it. Since she likes to spend, maybe you should send (oops, I meant ASK) HER to go to the hobby shop :-). Some men find that if they do something for their wife (watch the kid while they go out with the girls, buy them something nice, or just be espeically nice to them, like cook dinner) it helps them feel like the husband deserves something too. Other wives just take more advantage!
The control thing can be especially tough. It would be very hard to get her to believe that it is her idea you go flying and buying. If it were me, I would give up the acordian and running :-), but then I am lazy and like rock-n-roll :-). I would sit down with her and explain how important flying is to you, and that you don't mean to take anything away from her by doing it. Apparently, you make enough money to pay the bills and still support both of your hobbies, so that shouldn't be a problem. Like I said, some women are more compasionate if they feel their needs are being taken care of, and are more likely to give in to the spouses desires. Others just get more demanding. I hope yours is the former. It would be unfortunate (especially, since you have a child now) to feel the need check the expiration date on the divorce papers. I hope you can work it out! It does appear hopeful since she still calls you "honey". If she called you a less affectionate name like "You F^@#!^& B@$+@&+, there may be another solution that would be a better option;) |
RE: Almost busted at LHS
I didn't know anyone could enjoy the accordion!!:D:D
My wifes like "Your gonna do it any way so go ahead." And the jewley realy helps!! |
RE: Almost busted at LHS
Marriage is working at it I guess. Give up running and the accordion, nah, can't do that. Christmas is coming up, maybe I'll get her an airplane. :D
Thanks for listening guys, I appreciate it. |
RE: Almost busted at LHS
I understand about not giving up the running. I have a friend that had to give up running and really misses it. My cousin has been running for years he is now 54 and is two inches shorter than he was a few years ago. The doctor said it was from all the running.
It may work getting her a plane. I can't even get mine to go to the field with me very often. I did get my wife to partake in my previous hobby (fishing) but then she didn't want me to go by myself and leave her with the kids [:o] I tried taking the kids, but then all I did was help them, and didn't get to fish myself. [:@] You could do like I did with my wife and fishing. I bought "her" a really good rod and reel, and then "I" got to fish with it :-). However, the repercussions of crashing "her" plane may be disasterious. It is tough to win no matter which way you go. Hang in there! :-) |
RE: Almost busted at LHS
Geez guys, don't feel bad, I have over 55 planes, and got 2 Nosen Mustangs last week and a 27.5 % Edge 540 yesterday. It is a sickness, but I don't want to be healed. I am working on 3 planes right now, a scratch Long EZ, a kitbashed twin and a 12 foot glider, but have to move them all to the back burner when the Edge goes on the bench.
Man, what a fun hobby. |
RE: Almost busted at LHS
I have suspected for some time now that there is an additive in our nitro methane fuel that has properties similar to the addictive effects of "Crack Cocaine". I now think I have enough evidence to write a proposal for a federal grant to study this phenomena!
|
RE: Almost busted at LHS
My wife and I have a simple arrangement: what ever I spend on my planes she gets to spend on whatever she wants. However, it doesn't seem to work in reverse. When she spent a lot of money on a replacement engagement ring (long story), I figured I was well on my way to a 1/3 scale P-38 :D. Then she told me that didn't count.
For the most part, as long as money is fine, every one is well fed and sheltered, and we have breathing room in th bank account, I can pretty much spend what I want. |
RE: Almost busted at LHS
Hey Gonflyn I think I would like to be included in that grant deal if it comes about. I counted up the other day and I have 20 planes in some shape or other. The good news is that the better half has been on the buddy box a couple of times now & she wants me to build her a Corsair! Maybe there is hope for me yet.

RE: Almost busted at LHS
We have been married 25 years now. I still get the grief, but have a solution. We have budgete our expenses for over 15 years now. I mean actually sitting down each month and dividing the monthly take home income in columns for our bills, food, electric, gas for cars, etc. Two of the columns have money set aside for me and my wife. It is the same amount every month. The agreement is that I don't tell her how to spend hers and she doesn't tell me how to spend mine. If I go over, I must (and believe rightlyso) take that overspend and take it out of the next month's budget. The only other solution is to keep 4-5 planes in the garage on racks. When you want another one, crash one of the 4-5, don't bring home the parts, and fill in the slot. (Yeah....I'm kidding)
|
RE: Almost busted at LHS
You have to plan ahead for things like this, I handle the RC auction for our club twice a year or so, and attend many fun flys etc throughout the year, You should see some of the "DOOR PRIZES" that I have won, new CG Sukhoi was my latest "win" :D
You just gotta plan ahead oh yeah and always pay cash no paper trail that way Terry |
RE: Almost busted at LHS
My Wife and I have already spoken about my new hobby. I think in the last 2 months I've spent in excess of $500.00 for just the bells and whistles (Avistar, TX/RX kit, engine was a birthday present from my Brother in law) and I'm in the midst of rebuilding my first crashed fuselage. She doesn't say anything because for the last 8 years or so, she has spent thousands of dollars on her hobby (rubber stamping/altered books/paper arts) and where she gets a whole room in the house for her "studio" I get my little section in the basement, along w/the unpacked boxes from our move 4 years ago.
I've tried to get her involved w/comming down to the field to watch, but the only thing she has agreed to do is pick out Monocoat colors for the new rebuild (Metallic plum and Aluminum). Oh well, maybe in the spring when it's time to give the new creation a testflight, I can get her to go and put her on the buddy box (also purchased this month!). I think I've got it bad too,...I mean, does anyone else have the Tower catalog sitting on their desk at work like I do?:D |
RE: Almost busted at LHS
Cruzomatic ....
A kid .... 19 months old .... this is perfect. Your doing it for HIM. Your getting a "start", so when he grows up ( next year ) you can bond togehter in the greatest father and son hobby there ever was. Better start buying the kid more toys !!!!:D |
RE: Almost busted at LHS
donhef....yep! I had a Tower catalog on my desk at work. Fortunately, my job and subscription (they only send them for a year if you don't buy anything) ran out about the same time. Unfortunately, I had a backup copy in the "library"
cstevec...yep! If you post here, you WILL be included in the study :-) hookedonrc...Good plan! The downside is that you can go broke twice as quickly :-) But then you didn't mention the dreaded credit card so YOU should be okay! The plan for the "leaving the trash, and filling open slot" also sounds good. Unfortunately, I didn't follow the first part (brought home the trash) and bought and built a new kit, then put the original back together. Flyboy...Have you ever thought of buying/starting your own hobby shop? You have more airplanes than both of the hobby shops around here. You may also want to consider becoming an investor in a Balsa Forrest. Then you could help replenish our natural resource :-). It is too bad we can't "plant" our balsa scraps and grow our own balsa trees. But in your case, it sounds like you never crash them, you just still buy more. And I have to ask....what do you plan to do with TWO NORSEN MUSTANGS? I just looked at those things, they are HUGE. You could fly a medium sized dog in one of them. Are you thinking of building a P-82? [:'(] <-- Green with envy;) I have to go now...I need to find a job so I can get another "fix" while I am waiting on that grant money :-) |
RE: Almost busted at LHS
MMMM WM T-34. I had one with a Saito 56 on it. I think that was the best plane I had ever owned so far. It flew great with the saito on it, looked great. The only problem I had with it, that was easily fixed, is that I had troble slowing it down. But I was swinging a 10X10 APC prop and I was running rich so I didnt throttle down a whole lot. This plane was sold by a "friend" when I left it at his house beacuse he needed a Tranny for his car. He sold my plane, my box, my radio all for 300 bucks. Didnt see a dime of it. Needless to say I dont talk to him anymore. I had 3 flights on the plane and 6 tanks through the Saito[:@]
|
RE: Almost busted at LHS
Havoc,
Let me get this straight. You left your RC equipment at a friends house. He needed a new tranny for a vehicle of his so he sold YOUR stuff to make some $300.00 or so. GEEEZZZZZZ, what did he say when you asked for your stuff? |
RE: Almost busted at LHS
He Told me he sold it and he would buy new stuff to replace it. I almost killed him. He never did anything about it....

Would like to put one in our shop here, but dealerships are impossible to get now. Great Planes and Horizon were my 2 main accounts, and since I sold the shop and they ran it out of business, both of those accounts say there is already a hobby shop here and they don't want me to compete. The other shop in town has those two accounts too, but doesn't sell RC. Sux. Actually, the P-51 was supposed to be one, but I ended up ordering two, and after thinking about it more, I have them for sale because I have too many huge birds and just ordered a 27.5 % Edge I want to build instead. If I don't sell them, I may build one someday. They are huge. Built a Nosen Gere sport many years ago. Same thing. Way too big to have more than 2 of them sitting around. I need a bigger shop. Much, much bigger. Donations gratefully accepted. :D :) |
RE: Almost busted at LHS
Running a Shop would be so Cool. Do this stuff for a living:D

RE: Almost busted at LHS
Adrian,
Come down and hang with us down at smash field, you'll feel right at home. Nothing but digruntled wives down here!! Joey |
RE: Almost busted at LHS
Hey Joey, good to hear from ya man. I think you have a plan there. I really need to take a plane or two next time I drive down there. We could fly and the ladies could go to the mall or something. Oh wait, that's what this thread is about.

RE: Almost busted at LHS
Been married 61 years this coming Dec. I was a modeler before we even met (free fllight gas).
I always have a comeback if I hear any complaints. Actually she used to come to the field and often expresses sympathy when I come home with a trash bag full of parts. Of course what she really likes are clothes and diamonds and her closet(s) are full. This narrows my choices at gift giving time. Having supplied her with the comforts of life, including the sparkling things, I get a free hand with the credit card especially if the receipt is from our local jeweler. Never forget the phrase "It was on sale. A real bargain, and it will never be cheaper." |
