Insanemoondoggie-- Your name says it all. Wish I could meet you in person. One of the reasons I love this hobby is that we are all ages, all walks of life, and yet we are all boys (and a few girls) playing with toy airplanes. I LOVE it. Our hobby can be cheap, or expensive, it can totally adapt to our budgets. It brings together people like you and me who would never otherwise, for this crazy love of playing with toy airplanes. We have people from all kinds, from former real-life pilots to 5-year-olds llike my son who just somehow love airplanes. There must be a gene for it. I love especially the old-timers who are doing this hobby until they drop, and I hope to do the same. And, just amazing how when old-timers do move on to that great place in the sky, their equiment is still usable 30 years later. Glow engines and RC planes are truly timeless in that sense. Technology hasn't made anything obsolete in THIS hobby, which can't be said for anything else I can think of.
Anyway, don't give up the hobby. From your picture you look like the last person who might like to fly toy airplanes, and I'd like you to be my buddy in a fight, but clearly you're the "bigger man," and a credit to us "boys playing with toy airplanes." |

Your right about so many different people love this Hobby .I have flying buddies from 13 yrs old to 87 years old. I really enjoy the friendship. And we always have a good time. We just had a club meeting and I decided I as just going to let it go and not say anything. But I guess several of the other members felt different and brought it to the officers attention. I was asked to explain what happened, after which about 6 or 7 other members confirmed my story. They said he owe`s me a plane or he will lose his membership if he doesnt own up to his actions. It`s to bad this happened , everyone makes mistakes but it`s how we deal with them that makes a difference. I`m good with just a heart felt sorry. I got the name InsaneMoondoggie many yrs, ago from my army buddies, stuck with me for over 35yrs. Most my friends just call me Insane LOL. You know, I`m going to be in the K.C area in about 3 weeks and bringing a couple of planes . Want to hook up and burn some holes in the sky ? As far as fighting, I truly got my belly full of it 35 yrs ago and feel there is no place for violence in this Hobby . When I show up at the field, people are happy to see me and I them. That would change if I started acting out of character. I hope you got that boy of yours a foamie . 5 yrs. old huh ? Thats cool . Your lucky , alot of kids don`t care for the hobby. The 4* is going to be rebuilt and I hope to post some pics later today as I need a little advise on how to repair the fuse. Thanks a bunch for the kind words. Lets go flying in a few weeks. |

I`ll be there Ken , I`m really looking forward to hanging out with you and Minn and who ever else shows up.
I told my wife I was thinking of giving it up, she called me a wuss and told me get back out to the shop and and get things back together. Told me to get a coule of ARF`s and save the building for the winter. LOL I hope to have a Skybolt ready for her maiden at the fun fly and who knows , maybe the 4* too. |

This is exactly the kind of stupidity that will drive me to 2.4 Ghz! I fly at a small club so we don't have too much trouble managing the Freq Board. We've already got guys moving to 2.4 simply because its the "new thing". Nevertheless, if I had to constantly worry about some knucklehead shooting me down I'd be making the investment in 2.4 - regardless of price.

All this week in KC after the floods we had calm winds and perfect temps and I still couldn't make it out to fly. :( I do drag the kids out with me sometimes just to watch, and the 5-year old boy loves it, and my 7-year old girl just humors me. I'm doing an old PT-40 trainer in the Barbie motif (ala Ken's PIF) just to humor her. Let me know when and where you (and also you Ken) will be here in KC and we will definitley seek you out. |

ORIGINAL: Campgems We had been talking about setting up a board for the 2.4 guys so we could at least get a count of cards and transmitters that matched. It sure makes you uneasy to see guys with transmitters in hand and no cards indicating the channel. At least now, we can tell if everyone "logged in". Finally got some pic`s , tore the covering off and took a look see. For coming down like it did , it is very repairable , I have been using 30 min epoxy when I glue the doublers on my builds and it seems to be working out really will. Crash tested so to speak. LOL
I`m finishing up a trainer right now for a new guy , then I`ll star on the 4 Star. Would fiberglass and epoxy be a strong enough repair where the fuse side broke apart ? |

I`ve got the fuse repaired and am happy with the way it turned out. Now I`m ready to repair the wing , and have a question ? I cut the cleaned the hinge slot out on the aileron and TE of the wing. Can I glue pin hinges in the same slots ? The T.E ans aileron are so thin I hate to cut new slots. |

If so you may be able to use pinned hinges. Just remember that they are thicker so they will need thicker slots. Use epoxy or hinge glue and protect the pin from epoxy. Are they thick enough to use Robart hinge pins? |

I got an unexpected e-mail form the person that shot me down. He apologized and offered to pay for the plane. What a pleasant surprise.
For me the apology is worth more than the plane but he insisted on paying for the plane. So instead we agreed he would pay for the parts for the repair. The plane has been repaired for sometime now and flies great. And I had pretty much put this behind me. I just wish we had worked it out sooner by dealing with it the day it happened. But I`m happy with the final outcome. No issues and no worries , just getting back to having fun. Cool [8D] |

Having flown that 4-star at the fun fly I can tell you that you did an outstanding job repairing. It's a great flying plane and I had blast flying it. I'm really glad that you worked it out with the guy who shot you down. It's always nice when things can work out like this. Ken |

This weekend I was at my field - I am a new flyer who just got his wings this season - I had my pin on the board, another pilot told me he was on the same channel. The system worked just like it needed to, I told him I was charging my TX and the box was not in the impound, he went up as he wanted, taking my pin off the board. As soon as I was fully charged, I took the TX to impound, making very sure that it was turned off and would not be a problem.
Simple communication and common sence ensured that we did not have a problem together - why do some people find it to be so hard. Sorry for your loss. BTW - if it makes you feel any better, I burried my plane on my next flight, it would seem proper TX controls cannot prevent pilot error. manks |

Thanks Ken, To be honest I was a little spooked of the plane , but man after seeing what you can do with it made me realize this plane is very capable of things that are beyond my skill level. And after the flights you put on it , the engine has really come on , your style of flying was good for it. Tx.
Thanks Manks , I`m really not out anything and the man has my respect for dealing with the issue . It`s nice to have it a done deal. And no it does`nt make me feel better you smucked your plane lol. Wondered why there was 2 crash sounds, one be hind the other. oops. I am still pretty new and was taking a plane off with a left to right cross wind - pretty strong. Because the pits are to the left I could not really fly towards them so I had to fly the cross wind. I rotated the plane, the wind caught it, rolling it to the right, it stalled and cartwheeled in. Dammage is not that bad really, kind of like on your 4* Fuse. It will only take a few hours to glue it back, all the parts are pretty big. I could use the break, I have used up all of my flying political capital with my wife to get my wings this season, I don't think she is too bothered by me being down a plane. I am looking at getting a 4* 60 (I have a nice little OS 61 waiting to be mounted, and an even nicer OS .91 4 Stroke that could be put on to that plane) I think I will continue to work on the basics with my trainer (a GP 40 that was not the plane I crashed) and take some advanced flight training that is being offered at my club (once my wife lets me get out again). Did you build your 4 * or was it an ARF. I am finding that as much as I enjoy the flying, building is really a very relaxing thing to do and I really enjoy it a lot so I think I will build the 4* which I hear is a very fast, easy build. What are your thoughts? |

Yep My Four star is kit built. Very easy build , but I have yet to see a fast building kit some just take longer than others.
The 60 size would be a good match for either of your engines. With a Saito 56 I had to move the battery back in the fuse and had to add a 1/4 oz to the tail to get it to balance. So you may want to choose your engine for balance reasons. My wife likes the fact my planes keep me out of her hair, I make sure the honey do list is up to date and it`s good to go. |
